One of the most hateful men in American politics is dead : Former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, a North Carolina Republican who became an icon to conservatives, died Friday at the age of 86, a senior congressional source told CNN. Can't even begin to think of anything nice to say about this guy -- but a lot of other people will start praising Helms as if none of the hateful stuff matters. The hateful stuff matters. Let's reminisce on the life of one of America's biggest bigots who ruined the lives of so many.

Well, in what is obviously a gust-busting turn, the editors of the New York Times are beginning to worry that they are the rubes. In this morning's lead editorial ("New and Not Improved"), they detail and denounce many of Obama's post-Hillary pivots to the center. As their irritation builds, I'm thinking that there are only three positions that could explain this editorial. First, that the editors genuinely believe that Obama could win the general election with his primary season policy ideas.

This is another instance of the phenomenon that I tried to describe in "Opportunism knocks, part 3." It would be a mistake to take Obama's articulation of his antiwar position seriously in roughly the same sense that it would be to take his modulation of his antiwar position seriously.

It's interesting to watch Obama take hit after hit from the liberal left as his campaign pushes to the center for the general election. We all know that Obama isn't going to stay in the center once he's elected. He's just trying to look more conservative for the sake of getting elected. We also know that the liberals are still going to vote for Obama. He's their messiah. He may break their heart now and then, but what are they going to do? Vote for McCain instead? Or Ralph Nader again?
