Governments have changed. War erupted and ended. Neighbors had children, and then grandchildren. But Hedviga Golik never left her tiny apartment in Croatia's capital -- until her mummified body was carried out this week, 35 years after she died.

abandonedstuff.comFound 49 days, 13 hours, 31 minutes, and 51 seconds agoImagine having no one check on you , for almost 30 years. It's hard to imagine that happening in an apartment building, but somehow, Europe pulled it off. Neighbours broke into the apartment of a dead woman, and they found her.. in bed.. dead. They were understandably startled. No word in the story if they'll be charged with breaking and entering, if that's even a crime in Croatia right now?

The Associated Press reports on a very quiet neighbor: Woman's dead body lies in flat for 35 years
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) -- Governments have changed. War erupted and ended. Neighbors had children, and then grandchildren. But Hedviga Golik never left her tiny apartment in Croatia's capital -- until her mummified body was carried out this week, 35 years after she died.
Police said Friday that no one ever reported Golik missing and no one has come to claim her body.
Residents of her loft building in downtown Zagreb had broken into Golik's flat after deciding that the apartment should belong to them, and not to her.

A co-worker told me he read a news story about a woman in Croatia who was dead for 35 years before neighbors discovered her mummified remains. It wasnât that they missed her, they were just trying to break into what they thought was her abandoned apartment. I brought this up with Nat and Farnsworth over dinner yesterday.
âIn a sense, that story kind of makes me feel good about myself, because no way would it take people 35 years to notice I was gone. No way. Maybe a year, max.â
âA year, Jenny?

The discovery of Golik's body on Tuesday prompted media debates on how it is possible for a woman to die so long ago without anyone noticing. One local journalist said it showed people were becoming more alienated.

Today, Croatia meets Turkey in a quarter-final match at Euro 2008, which is a coincidence, since this story is now making the rounds: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/05/16/croatia.body.ap/ . A Croatian woman sat down to watch some TV and passed away. Nothing special about that story, except ... she was discovered last month, but she sat down back in 1973.

And also very sad.
In Zagreb, Croatia the mummified remains of a woman were found in her apartment. It's estimated she'd been dead for 35 years.
35 years!!!
Sadly, no one had ever reported the woman, Hedviga Golik, missing. Given that, it is not surprising that no one has come to claim her body.
It's entirely possible that Golik's body would still be lying in her bed if her neighbors hadn't decided to break into her apartment.
Just why did they break into her apartment? Well, her neighbors had decided they should live in the apartment instead of Golik.

I was surfing the web this morning when I came upon a story from CNN about a woman in Croatia who dead in her apartment for 35 years before anybody noticed. This means that she has died before I was born and decomposed in her small piece of the world for the entire duration of my life before her neighbors forced their way into her room.
Even more disturbing was the fact that they busted down her door not out of concern for her well-being, but because they were fighting amongst themselves over who should have her apartment.
