CondeNast, the parent of Wired and Portfolio, has made an interesting acquisition, a rumor we had been following for a month: it has bought the veteran tech news site ArsTechnica , for around $25 million. The news was first reported by TechCrunch, and we have corroborated from sources as well. The site will be part of Wired Digital. The price is around the same as Wired magazine paid for buying Wired.com back from Lycos-Daum in 2006. Since then, the digital arm of Wired and parent Conde has been making steady stream of small acquisitions, including social news site Reddit, NutritionData, travel blog producer SFO Media, and more to come.

Over the weekend, Microsoft said it "raised with Yahoo an alternative that would involve a transaction with Yahoo but not an acquisition of all of Yahoo." Sources told Kara Swisher that the alternative deal is an acquisition or partnership to give Microsoft control over Yahoo's search marketing business. Yahoo would keep everything else - notably its display advertising business - and Microsoft would control 30 percent of the search market. Perhaps more importantly to Microsoft, it would prevent Google from controlling more than 80 percent of the market with its own Yahoo deal.

Just when you thought it was safe to call it a weekend, Wired capped off the week of tech-writing upheaval by picking up the mega-popular and always sharp technology news site Ars Technica. The news follows CBS's recent acquisition of CNET for a cool $1.8 billion and the decision by PC World 's editor-in-chief Harry McCracken to step down in favor of starting his own yet-to-be-named tech news venture.
According to Tech Crunch , the actual price that the Conde Nast-owned pub is paying for Ars Technica has yet to be officially announced, but it's being estimated somewhere in the range of $25 million.

Well, I guess there is a little bit of acquisition fever going around the technical press. Yesterday CBS acquired CNet Networks , and today Conde Nast acquired Ars Technica . Conde Nast owns Wired, and this means that Ars Technica will basically become part of Wired.com . The news was broken by TechCrunch , who report they've confirmed it. The price is unknown, but TechCrunch believes it is around $25 million.
So, where's my buyout offer?

Not long ago I noted that Conde Nast, a magazine publisher, is vastly expanding its online presence -- they recently acquired some travel blogs with hints that more acquisitions were soon to follow.
Today we learn that they just bought the popular technology site Ars Technica.
"The site will become part of Wired Digital (which in turn is under CondéNet, run by Sarah Chubb)," reports TechCrunch. "Wired Digital assets include Wired.com and Reddit (acquired in 2006)."
Arrington's sources tell him that the buying price is somewhere around $25 million, the same it paid for Wired.

Ars Technica, a decade-old independent tech news and analysis site, is becoming a part of Conde Nast's Wired Digital group.
The acquisition will be announced Monday, sources familiar with the acquisition said, confirming a report Friday in TechCrunch . The price tag was near $25 million, TechCrunch said.
CondeNet, the Conde Nast online division run by Sarah Chubb, has acquired several other sites, including Reddit and SFO*Media 's HotelChatter . It's generally left those sites alone, so that seems a likely outcome for Ars Technica, as well.
