And as a bonus, many of the thirty-five pieces are autographed: Alex Dove, from auctioneers Lyon and Turnbull, said: "Poetry didn't really come to him until I think he was 47 and the voices in his head told him that he'd be able to write poems.
"Then he thought he was the best thing since sliced bread, he thought he should be the poet laureate and all sorts.

Poems by the man ridiculed as "the world's worst poet" are expected to fetch up to £6,500 at auction.
Thirty-five of William McGonagall's works - many of them autographed - are going under the hammer on Friday.
The ditties by "The Tayside Tragedian" have been valued in the same league as Harry Potter first editions signed by JK Rowling.
McGonagall, who died in 1902, was often mocked and had food thrown at him during readings in Dundee.

The world's worst poet's works are going under the hammer, not to be destoryed, (a ha!), but to be aunctioned off . Re-reading McGonagall's truly epic piece " The Tay Bridge Disaster " it's not hard to see why he was regarded as the worst. The whole thing is a mess of forced rhymes and uneven meters, but the final few lines really are a piece of terrible genius:

I've been told by others that I write some pretty decent poems. Some examples of which have on occasion made it unto this blog. The problem is trying to get any earnings from the best of them. Now it appears I realy should write far worse prose as it looks like being more profitable .
