Austin Bramwell suggests a definition: Conservatism is the defense of legitimacy wherever it happens to exist. "Legitimacy" here is defined in the empirical, Weberian sense: that is, an institution is legitimate if and only if the opinion has become widespread that it is right (for whatever reason or lack thereof) to obey it. The conservative, in short, cultivates obedience to existing institutions. This definition, I submit, has all the advantages of the conventional definitions, none of their defects, and some important advantages of its own.

(McCain, by the way, was for talking to Hamas before he was against it, another example of torching the past.)

[ Stephen Spruiell ] Having just watched the Hardball clip everyone's talking about today, in which Chris Matthews embarrasses conservative talker Kevin James over his inability to answer a question about Neville Chamberlain and the Munich conference, I can't say I'm surprised that none of the liberal bloggers who are going to town with this story have mentioned Matthews' own historical error. Near the end of the clip, as talk turned to the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole, Matthews says, "Wasn't the U.

So today President of the United States George W. Bush, speaking overseas, compared the Democratic nominee for president to a Nazi appeaser .
He didn't come right out and say that, of course, possibly because he thought he was being subtle, or perhaps because he doesn't really have a firm grasp on the actual historical events or more likely because he's clearly a coward. In any event, anyone and everyone over the age of consent knew exactly what he was talking about.
Never mind the enormous brouhaha over what the Dixie Chicks did lo those many years ago, and the main argument of the time, which was that their sin wasn't so much in what they said as where they said it, namely, outside the borders of this great nation.

~~ Unfortunately for KIRO fill-ins Frank Shiers and David Goldstein; these shrimp cocktails were hired during Passover to fill in for Ron & Don (m-f, 3-6p). "They're not kosher," said PD Rod Arquette, "but few in the R&D audience knew the difference."
~ ~ "You don't know what you're talking about." We've been trashing MSNBC's Chris Matthews lately because he gets spittle on his jaw when he talks, and what he's usually talking about generally reveals him to be a supercilious ass. But Thursday, we gotta hand it to you, Chris:

Lars Larson makes the same mistake on Dan Abrams' show that the radio blowhard did with Chris Matthews , and it's just as embarrassing. He keeps blathering on with no regard to facts, which Portland listeners are too familiar with, and he keeps trying to run roughshod over those who call him on his crap. Dan Abrams does call him on it, relentlessly, and Jonathan Alter gives him a good smacking, calling Lars stupid and racist (he tries very hard not to call Lars racist, but that shoe fits too well).

Isn't it interesting that it is the Democratic, rather than Republican, candidate for the U.S. presidency who is causing the ghosts of Reaganism to stir once again? Barack Obama's simple yet revolutionary ideas of principled engagement with the leadership of the world's pariah countries is causing a backlash of caustic criticism, accusing the Senator of proposing appeasement, more often than not inappropriately mentioning the name Chamberlain . I think it was Fareed Zakaria whom I first heard talking about how these criticisms were disturbingly similar (nearly word for word) to the criticism Reagan got from his own party when he first proposed talks with Gorbachev; what would end up becoming the first steps in bringing down the Soviet Union.

And yet, as James Rubin points out, Mr. McCain's hypocrisy on the issue and whether or not we should talk to groups like Hamas, stinks like an overflowing cat box. If the recent exchanges between President Bush, Barack Obama and John McCain on Hamas and terrorism are a preview of the general election, we are in for an ugly six months. Despite his reputation in the media as a charming maverick, McCain has shown that he is also happy to use Nixon-style dirty campaign tactics. By charging recently that Hamas is rooting for an Obama victory, McCain tried to use guilt by association to suggest that Obama is weak on national security and won't stand up to terrorist organizations, or that, as Richard Nixon might have put it, Obama is soft on Israel.

Meanwhile, fans of the other finalist, David Coo k, suggested that a vote for Archuleta would be a vote for terror. Tiffany Shuler, age 13, of White Plains, New York, issued a statement on behalf of herself, and her best friends forever, Amber Waletsky and Shawnia James. "David Archuleta is an appeaser and as we learned from the example of Neville Chamberlain surrendering the Sudetenland to Hitler in 1938, appeasement does not work. Plus, David Cook is like, so totally hot! He rocks!"

Whatever the difficulties of conservatism, surely one can improve upon the typical performance of those who take it upon themselves to explain it. Today we assume that Christianity and the Christian clergy are the Conservative party at prayer. In the late 4th century you have powerful pagans such as ...
