Even as same-sex couples across California begin making plans to tie the knot, opponents are redoubling their efforts to make sure wedding bells never ring for gay couples in the nation's most populous state.

I am really lamenting today that we do not have a passionate leader to forge ahead on the federal marriage amendment as a candidate. It is a sad irony that democracy could be so desecrated by the ivory tower that is the California Supreme Court. It is going to take a lot of effort to overcome the decision today that overturned the law that only a marraige between one man and one woman is valid or recognized in California. We need to get to work right away.

Widely covered elsewhere, but this is a positive move in the direction towards eliminating discrimination in America:
California's Supreme Court declared that gay couples in the nation's biggest state can marry - a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony.
Same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month. But the window could close soon after - religious and social conservatives are pressing to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the Supreme Court ruling and ban gay marriage.

As a service for those Americans too ingrossed in the lives of Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus or Britney Spears, The California Supreme Court struck down the California law that stated that marriage was only between a man and a woman. They used the state law which overturned a ban on interracial marriages as the basis for overturning the law. I don't see why that law should apply, but then I'm not a lawyer and/or judge who has much more experience ignoring common sense.

A very good friend of mine, in the process of planning a commitment ceremony with his (fantastic) partner of many years, IM'd me as soon as he read the news, with a triumphant, "WOOOOOT!!" Ellen DeGeneres announced that she would marry her long-time partner, Portia de Rossi, during her TV show. San Francisco -- or at least most of it -- celebrated.

I'm sure you saw this article from the AP today, but did any one else NOT gloss over the line "California's Supreme Court to postpone putting its decision legalizing gay marriage into effect"? How is this NOT blatant judicial activism? That being said, I must admit I'm entirely against gay 'marriage'. It is an abomination and a travesty. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

"With a stroke of a pen Thursday, the Republican-dominated court swept away decades of tradition and said there was no legally justifiable reason why the state should withhold the institution of marriage because of a couple's sexual orientation," reported AP's Lisa Leff [emphasis mine] - Gay marriage opponents vow to fight Calif. ruling . She's gets right the arbitrary "stroke of a pen" despotic nature of the ruling, but shouldn't that be "several hundreds of decades of tradition?"

But what is this all about ? Thursday's ruling could alter the dynamics of the presidential race, as well as state and congressional contests in California and beyond, by causing a backlash among conservatives and drawing them to the polls in large numbers.

As long as I'm being a bit controversial tonight, I just want to say a big "hooray" to the California Supreme Court for legalizing gay marriage today -- and send a big plea to Californians to NOT sign the petitions (hugely funded by the far-right) to get a prop on the ballot to strike it down.
Enough inequality. Enough discrimination. Enough energy wasted trying to stop others from having rights. I don't understand why opponents care so much, how it harms them in any way. I really don't.
Oh, I may get flamed for bringing up this hot topic, but I don't care.

"In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation," Chief Justice Ronald George wrote for the majority in ringing language that delighted gay rights activists.
Massachusetts in 2004 became the first, and so far only, state to legalize gay marriage; more than 9,500 couples have taken advantage of the law.

According to Chief Justice Ronald George about the recent ruling in California on Gay marriage, "In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation,"
I wonder whose children is he talking about. Read the news here.

A conservative group said it would ask California's Supreme Court to postpone putting its decision legalizing gay marriage into effect until after the fall election. That's when voters will likely have a chance to weigh in on a proposed amendment to California's constitution that would bar same-sex couples from getting married.

Perhaps most of you heard the news that gay marriage will soon be legal in California (this is the state to which I immigrated more than 20 years ago). Somewhat expectedly the news was met with both joy and outrage. Many gays in California and in the rest of the nations seem very happy (most perhaps do not really care since they have no plans to 'marry'), while many conservatives call this an 'outrage.' At least this is the word that James Dobson used.
