Well, it turns out that it just might be illegal to impersonate someone on MySpace and crush a teenage girl's spirit so much that she ends up hanging herself.
Just when you thought the saga of Megan Meier was over with and the villain was going to get off free and clear, the culprit Lori Drew has been indicted on charges that could lead her to as much as 20 years imprisonment. Certainly no one can disagree that what Ms. Drew did was evil, at worst, and downright scummy at best.
The problem here is that the charges, at this point, are pretty flimsy at best.

But a story in this morning's Los Angeles Times requires some comment. Scott Glover and P.J. Huffstutter, "L.A. files 'cyber bully' charges against Missouri mother in connection with girl's suicide; Lori Drew is accused of creating a fraudulent MySpace persona whose comments may be linked to the teen's death," Los Angeles Times , May 16, 2008.

Scott Glover & PJ Huffstutter : Invoking a criminal statute more commonly used to go after computer hackers or crooked government employees, federal prosecutors in Los Angeles on Thursday charged a Missouri mother with fraudulently creating a MySpace account and using it to "cyber-bully" a 13-year-old girl who later committed suicide.
The girl, Megan Meier, hanged herself in her upstairs bedroom two years ago, shortly after being jilted by an Internet suitor she thought was a 16-year-old boy.

Gerald Prante @ Tax Foundation [ 340K PDF ]: For 18 consecutive years the Tax Foundation has published an estimate of the combined state-local tax burden shouldered by the residents of each of the 50 states. For each state, we calculate the total amount paid by the residents in taxes, and we divide those taxes by the total income in each state to compute a "tax burden" measure. We make this calculation not only for the most recent year but also for earlier years because tax and income data are revised periodically by government agencies, and in our own methodology to take advantage of new datasets.

Lori Drew, a 49 year-old woman (and mother), has finally been indicted in the Megan Meier suicide case. According to the LA Times, she faces "three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on the girl and one count of conspiracy." As many of you remember, the authorities in Missouri could not find a statute under which to indict Lori Drew, but now, thankfully, the case has been handed over to federal prosecutors.

Unclear on the Concept: A note to the latimes.com headline writers. You can't say "Spoiler Alert" and then follow that up with a colon and the actual spoiler . That's not an alert. That's a headline that tells you exactly what's going to happen on American Idol before you've had a chance to watch it. Sheesh.

MSNBC story on Anthrax suspect's suicide . If it was him, good riddens. Whoever it was made my life hell I must say. Back then my MS symptoms were just starting. I was working at the Evil Hospital (which is now no longer in business - PDX'ers probably know which I mean). That scare made the idiots who ran said Evil Hospital decide that we at the switchboard, who also sorted mail, now had to handle all mail with gloves.
