Court has decided they just aren't important. I may not like this law in particular, but every time the courts overturn the will of the voters thus, it's a blow against democracy.
I'm going to vote against the state Constitutional Amendment proposed on this issue, assuming It makes it onto the ballot and that I'm not hit by a bus in the meantime. For that matter, I consider marriage a fundamentally religious concept that the state probably shouldn't be involved in at all. But I consider myself and the rest of us bound by the results of the ballot box, whether we like it or not.

When Americans look at Israel, we see a pioneer spirit that worked an agricultural miracle and now leads a high-tech revolution. We see world-class universities and a global leader in business and innovation and the arts. We see a resource more valuable than oil or gold: the talent and determination of a free people who refuse to let any obstacle stand in the way of their destiny.

I don't know, but it seems as though this kind of hair-trigger sensitivity wouldn't serve a person well as leader of the free world, especially if he's not guilty of the criticism he imagines in someone else's words.

Charles Krauthammer notes in his column celebrating Israel's 60th b'day that the Jewish state suffered 6,373 dead in its 1948-49 War of Independence, one percent of the 1948 population. That equates to 3 million Americans today . Or, as CK puts it, 35 Vietnams (taken as a percentage of America's population back then)--and the Vietnam War lasted 11 years, whereas Israel's killed back then were racked up in one year. And yet the world bloviates on about Palestinian suffering in the war that Arabs started, one perpetuated to this day by Arab rejectionism.

And today we know that the forces of Providence could not have chosen a better man than America's 33rd President. (Applause.) Eleven minutes after Israel came into existence, the United States became the first nation to recognize its independence. And because Harry Truman did what was right instead of following the conventional wisdom, we can say today that America is Israel's oldest and best friend in the world. As for the Knesset speech , there's a lot there, but may I say as the product in part of a Jewish family how accurate this is, not just at the Knisset, but at the dinner table:

Thursday May 15, 2008, American media hit a new low. To paraphrase Michelle Obama, I have never been less proud of my country.
On the occasion of Israel's 60th anniversary, President George W. Bush gave one of the greatest speeches of his career.
Yet, America's media could only see this event through the tiny prism of the upcoming presidential election, and thereby totally ignored virtually everything that was said by the most powerful man in the world to one of our nation's greatest allies.

There was a time when I thought nothing could be more thin or flimsy than Obama's presidential resume - not even an anorexic supermodel. A few years in the Illinois State House and half a term as a US Senator and Obama has a little less than nothing to show for it.
Well, today I stand corrected. The only thing thinner and flimsier than his resume is his "political" hide. Not too long ago, Obama took the New York Times Matron, Maureen Dowd, to task for her comments on his ears . Shame on you, Maureen!

Wow, Obama is on a roll - calling attention to things that would be better for him to simply ignore. Except in his world, everything is always about him. The latest flap over President Bush's remarks on the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Israel - have been fisked quite brilliantly by Dafydd at Big Lizards : Bush attacked appeasement -- and Obama instantly recognized himself, reacting angrily and defensively. So even Obama realizes that his proposed unconditional dialoging with Mahmoud, Jong-Il, Raul, and Oogo skirts perilously close to appeasement.

Forget for a moment Obama's childish tantrum at Bush's speech before the Knesset, Israel's parliament. Michael Barone identifies a more serious problem : ...Obama has not had a good March, April, and May. Starting with the March 4 primaries, he's trailed Clinton by 346,004 popular votes, and the blog estimates that he'll lose the still-to-come primaries by another 186,497 popular votes. That would put Clinton ahead of Obama not only counting Florida and Michigan, but also counting Florida and Michigan and the imputed totals in the Iowa, Nevada, Washington, and Maine caucuses.

Mark Steyn's astute observation is applicable to much more than foreign affairs:
Increasingly, the Western world has attitudes rather than policies. It's one thing to talk as a means to an end. But these days, for most midlevel powers, talks are the end, talks without end. Because that's what civilized nations like doing - chit-chatting, shooting the breeze, having tea and crumpets, talking talking talking. Uncivilized nations like torturing dissidents, killing civilians, bombing villages, doing doing doing.
