Chalk one up for the global warming crowd.
Several American activist groups, including Greenpeace and the Center for Biological Diversity, have also been lobbying hard to have polar bears listed as threatened. Experts now believe there are up to 25,000 polar bears remaining on the planet, and that number is in decline.
Listing the polar bear as a threatened species means all U.S. federal agencies will have to ensure that anything they authorize that might affect polar bears will not jeopardize their survival or the sea ice where they live.

I am so disgusted with this idiocy (goodbye ANWR, goodbye energy independence, hello pain) that I have turned my head from the news of the day to this Wife's Chart , which - in 1939 - was put together by some poor deluded man who believed he could get away with writing this and remain happy. On the other hand, the disorder makes it physically, or at least psychologically, impossible for the patient to take any action based on that burst of logic. The quote in this post's headline is from the DOI press release's own subhead (see here and below). Someone will need to explain how producing fossil fuels -- whose combustion is destroying the polar bear's habitat -- is consistent with preserving an endangered species.
The disorder is also marked by unintentional bursts of irony, as in the use of the phrase "Rule will allow continuation of vital energy production.

Today the US Government listed the Polar Bear as a Threatened Species . For the most part I'm just going to point you to what I said back here . I guess this now means that in order to remove the threat the US will finally take action against Climate Change. Won't it?
Nothing has changed, the same number of bears will be taken in Canada from currently sustainable populations. What is different is that there will no longer be sport hunters coming to Arctic Bay to hunt bear (there weren't any sport hunters in Arctic Bay this spring either for entirely different reasons, but if I start blogging about that local issue I'll end up giving myself an aneurysm and will quickly look like the mascot on Townie Bastard's blog ).

I had thought that this was the sort of news that would, by now, be greeted with a bit of a yawn. But then I have been following the story about the recent US declaration that polar bears are threatened by the shrinking of the Arctic Ice. Which means even the Bush administration now acknowledges what everyone else has been seeing for a while. Yet in the comments section there are the deniers - and the special interest groups - pretending that somehow none of this is happening.
Nature - the journal - is not a tabloid given to exaggeration for effect.

The US Department of the Interior has recently declared Polar Bears a Threatened Species. This came about due to direct and constant pressure in congress and by groups seeking to protect the bears from environmental damage. However, as I have pointed out in the past, Polar Bears are not endangered, they are not threatened. In fact, biologists, hunters, and indigenous peoples of the arctic region report that there are more polar bears now than at any time in human history. So what was this decision based upon?

Which isn't happening. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne cited dramatic declines in sea ice over the last three decades and projections of continued losses, The bear population across the Arctic from Alaska to Greenland doubled from about 12,000 to 25,000 since 1960 meaning, he said, that the polar bear is a species likely to be in danger of extinction in the near future.

Rule will allow continuation of vital energy production in Alaska
And that's just in the headline. It goes on from there to state that the decision will
…be accompanied by administrative guidance and a rule" (uh oh) "that defines the scope of impact my decision will have" (as in none?) "in order to protect the polar bear while limiting unintended harm to the society and economy of the United States" (take that all you big angry bears…)
While acknowledging that the polar bear is listed as a direct result of climate change, Kempthorne wanted
…to make it clear that this listing will not stop global climate change… That is why I am taking administrative and regulatory action to make certain the ESA (endangered species act) isn't abused" (abused?

Given the massive public outcry over gas prices, the public will no doubt be furious to find out that a plan to save energy and money has been kept under wraps by their own government. The White House has been sitting on a document for more than 6 months now that estimates a long term savings in excess of $2 trillion through 2040 if the federal government was to enact tougher greenhouse gas regulations for new automobiles.

The U.S. Department of the Interior secretary Dirk Kempthorne announced on May 14 that the polar bear will be listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, acknowledging that melting Arctic sea ice constitutes an ongoing threat to the bears' habitat. While the listing should provide the bears with some protection, it comes with baggage--namely the caveat that oil drilling will be permitted within polar bear habitats, under a proposed 4(d) rule. Sierra Club executive director Carl Pope sees the announcement as an empty gesture, explaining in a released statement that "allowing destructive energy development in polar bear habitat is akin to diagnosing someone with lung cancer and then handing them a lit cigarette.

Hopefully you'll find a few of them funny, if not we'll just have to add "my sense of humor" to the list of things that should be endangered.

Just days after the OC Register printed a defiant editorial warning against the folly of protecting Polar Bears, the Bush administration today designated the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endgangered Species Act.
The move is significant because polar bears are the first species to be designated as endangered primarily due to the effects of global warming. Hopefully, this action will set a precedent that will make it all the more difficult for future legislation to blatantly ignore the effects of global warming.

It's official. The U.S. Secretary of the Interior has placed the polar bear on the list of threatened species list under the Endangered Species Act. Apparently, global warming (as previously discovered by Al Gore) has created a massive loss of sea ice, which has and will continue to threaten current polar bear habitat. This loss of habitat puts polar bears at risk of becoming endangered in the foreseeable future. Research shows sea ice has been on a steady decline since 1979 based on satellite imagery.
