Mark Ambinder : Because Davis and Childers tangled via advertisements over whether Childers had been endorsed by Obama amid Rev. Wright's revenge tour, the press will be tempted to spin a Childers victory as a sign that Obama is not a drag on the ticket. Local factors and the national environment are going to be dispositive here, not Barack Obama. So don't believe the hype. I can't fault the thinking there either.

Now that the media has spent the last couple of hours flogging the WV primary results, I've reached a conclusion: it's really all about the media hearing themselves talk, no matter what idiocy drips out. So, I'd rather know what you guys think. Where do things go from here? Those of you who live in upcoming primary states -- what are you doing for candidates in your area? Have you made up your mind on your vote? How do we most thoroughly kick John McCain's behind in November?

It's a mild surprise that John Edwards is getting about 7% of the WV vote and no surprise that Clinton's winning by 39% so far, with 72% of the vote counted. But the HUGE news is the Democrat, Travis Childers, winning a VERY Republican 1st District race in Mississippi.
The district has been voting 59% and higher for GOP candidates and Presidents for the past 24 years. Childers' opponent tried repetitive ads tying Childers to Obama and his former Reverend Wright and Mississippi voters responded today with an upset that puts the GOP on notice that politics as usual is only going to gain them pink slips.

There is also some very bad news for Republican congressional hopes this fall tonight. For the third time this year, Democrats have won an overwhelmingly Republican district in a special election. This time, it's a seat in Mississippi. Republicans earlier lost seats in Louisiana and Illinois which have been safe Republican seats for years. Based on the results thus far, I think it is safe to assume both Rep. Steve Buyer and Rep. Mark Souder here in Indiana are extremely vulnerable this fall.
