* . It sure can't be George W. Bush's fault. If it's one thing we've learned since 2001, it's never Bush's fault (or the fault of any God fearing, flag waving, yellow ribbon bumper sticking Republican for that matter).
Not 9/11. Not Iraq. Not Katrina. Not the Federal deficit. Not the rise in business bankruptcies. Not the corruption by US companies with government contracts. Not inflation. Not the health care crisis. Not unemployment. Not the incredible shrinking dollar. Not our sullied moral reputation around the world and the loss of our influence and power.

"Bush's last round of golf as president dates back to October 13, 2003, according to meticulous records kept by CBS news."
So glad to know the media is so meticulous. That's almost two months after the August date Bush claimed to have stopped golfing.

There are many ways of supporting our military. You can give up golf... like President Bush has done . Or, you can attempt to pass some legislation, like the GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century. Yes, the Bill is expensive at an estimated $2.5 billion per year. But that is about what we spend in Iraq in one week. A years worth of war funding would provide GI Bill benefits to our troops for over 50 years.

The Democratic National Committee unveiled a new strategy this week, slamming John McCain for his ties to the oil industry by starting up a parody campaign Web site, ExxonMcCain '08 . Barack Obama himself has similarly worked to tie McCain to Exxon. Turns out they could have picked a better oil company, though -- a study released this week showed that while McCain has received more donations from the oil industry generally, Exxon employees have given more to Obama than to McCain.
Released by the Center for Responsive Politics, the study explains:

Overload the Ft Knox post office before they lock him away, and basically give him a drug induced lobotomy, which is the Army's tactic to silence the speakers of truth, especially the combat vets who know. Time is of the essence. All of us must make the decision of conscience before it is too late for all of us.

As one might expect, the Left is still in a lather over Bush's golf statement . They are claiming that it is a trivialization of soldiers' sacrifices, and another example of Bush's insensitivity to the costs of war.
As usual, though, the diatribes from the Left (especially Olbermann's nonsensical gem) expose their own faults, rather than Bush's. They all based their commentary on the Yahoo article linked above, and made it sound like this was Bush talking about his way of showing solidarity with the troops.

I rarely blog on politics. That topic is covered awfully well elsewhere -- almost everywhere else, it seems. But this caught my eye. Based on how the brief story is reported, Pres. Bush is not searching his soul or experiencing a moment of contrition. Either of those would have required too much depth. But the weight of events during his presidency has at the least soured his golf game and taken the joy out of it. I remember an interview (really, more like a few glib quips) made on the tee box, which found its way into one of Michael Moore's movies.

This is hardly the only preposterous aspect of President Bush's notion of giving up golf because he's sad about Iraq , but it does seem worth pointing out that he hasn't given up recreational boating and fishing at his family's enormous summer estate in Kennebunkport, Maine during the same period. If, as Bush says, "playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal" then what's the difference between that and his other leisure pursuits?
Meanwhile, it seems he actually gave up golf because of knee trouble a bit after the time he claims to have given it up to respect the troops.

It wasn't a leak - but VetVoice found this old 2003 CBS News story that says, yes, Bush had significant knee problems in December 2003. That was the problem that made him switch from running to break-neck bicycling. And that is the sort of problem that would make it tough to play golf too.
