Here's a picture of the T-Shirt being sold by the proprietor of a local bar in Cobb County, GA. Sure, the guy, Mike Norman, has the whiney excuse that it's "just a joke," but there really isn't a doubt that it plays on the ugliest of racist stereotypes out there. And Norman has a history of making ugly racist "jokes. It is time for Republicans such as John McCain to denounce this sort of grass roots ugly racism. Down in Cobb County, Georgia, there is a bar owner selling these shirts:
The bar owner is a stone racist, and an equal opportunity hater (one of his signs said "I wish OJ had married Hillary"). But so what? Let the moron have his little bit of fame, just like the rebel-flag-tattoo sporting cheesesteak slinger who loves the TV lights in Philly.

The guy who made the shirt says that if you look at the ears and the hairline, there's a resemblance.

Consider also that Obama has won a number of overwhelmingly white states and this just doesn't add up. Obama has won five of 12 primaries in which black voters made up less than 10 percent of the electorate, and caucuses in states such as Idaho and Wyoming that are overwhelmingly white. But exit polls show he has struggled to attract white voters who didn't attend college and earn less than $50,000 a year. Today, he and Hillary Clinton square off in West Virginia, a state where she is favored and where the votes of working-class whites will again be closely watched.

A new Barack Obama T-shirt being peddled by bar owner Mike Norman has some folks up in arms and insisting that the depiction of Obama as Curious George exploits racial stereotypes .
I have no idea whether or not Norman's a racist -- I certainly don't prescribe to his anti-immigrant views the article mentions -- but I will say that reflexively branding someone a racist because he caricatures a black guy as a monkey is likely just as suggestive of racism as any overt racist remark would be. Frankly, what can one say about these t-shirts ? Staggeringly offensive? Blatantly racist? Complete douchebaggery at its lowest? Yes, yes, and yes.
It has been tremendously dispiriting to watch the way that race and gender have been wielded by all sides in this campaign. The Clinton campaign has made racist appeals, the Obama campaign misogynist ones; the GOP and tools like this guy are willing to use both (happily with hilarious results ). Maybe we could chalk it up to blindness to privilege or internalized bigotry, but to do so is to forget that there's a whole lot of open, proud bigotry still at large in this country.

Let's start reminding people before the general election, CONSERVATIVISM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACISM. Conservatism is, among other things, a celebration of the freedom and independence of the individual. By focusing on the individual, our principles are inherently color blind. Judgments for or against a group of people based on any biological category are antithetical to conservatism, period.
