This story in the Daily Telegraph today about Burmese officials allegedly pilfering foreign aid and selling it just reinforces any prejudice one might have about the efficacy of sending aid to a country governed by thugs. It is not obvious to me what, if anything, the major powers could or should do about this. Outright military intervention seems unlikely and given the stretched resources of western powers, unwise. However, given its rapid economic ascent, one might hope that India could exert some influence for good, which is preferable to that of China.

If he can't do it, it can't be done:
The head of the U.S. Pacific Command flew into Burma on Monday aboard the first U.S. military aid flight, to press for a full-scale international relief operation for victims of Cyclone Nargis. Facing mounting international pressure to open their country's borders, Burmese officials promised to consider the request.
In New York, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed "immense frustration" with the pace of the relief effort, slowed by Burma's secretive military government.

Right now, in addition to the complete fucking abomination that is the junta's refusal to allow the wave of aid workers needed for the devastated nation, there are credible allegations that the regime is hoarding high quality food from relief shipments for itself and the military while giving the citizens poor quality or spoiled food. 'Cause, you see, if you run a country with the military, then you better fuckin' feed the military first, or revolution is gonna happen. That's 400,000 members of the military and roughly a couple of million family members.

Here's what I wish we would have done. Loaded up the bombers until they couldn't carry any more, have a second wave ready, a third, and a put a continuous rotation in place ready to keep it up until the job is done. Then, get them in the air along with escorts that say "just try and stop us" and just bombed the hell out of
Burma with food, clothes, and medicine until the job is done. Blast our way in if necessary, and drop crate after crate full of supplies, one drop after another, and keep it up until the mission is complete.

But all this chess aside, we should perhaps spare a thought for the Burmese contingent in RP. As you know, Burma (or officially, Myanmar) was recently struck by Cyclone Nargis which resulted in the deaths (according to some estimates) of up to 100,000 people.

Burmese officials selling aid in local markets
An estimated 100,000 people have died after Cyclone Nargis struck more than a week ago.
But Oxfam has warned that the death toll could multiply 15-fold with severe rain storms predicted to strike today, hampering humanitarian assistance.
It comes as Buckingham Palace confirmed today that the Queen has made a "significant personal donation" to the relief effort.
