With recent devastating news of the cyclone in Burma (where the official death toll tops 30,000 and 2 million people face disease and starvation) and the earthquake in China (more than 12,000 dead so far), Suzie at Echidne's blog reminds us :
When a disaster occurs, don't forget the gendered aspects. During the chaos, women can be more vulnerable to rape and violence by intimate partners. They may trade their bodies for aid. Because women often care for the young, the old and the sick, they may have greater needs or different needs than men.

Well, they're estimating 10,000 casualties so far from the earthquake in China that measured magnitude 7.9 on the Richter scale. NPR's Melissa Block and Robert Siegel were actually in the area when it took place and they are filing lots of reports. Melissa had her equipment running at the time of the quake and so you can hear her reactions here . There's a lot of information (including how to donate to various relief efforts) on the NPR website. Start here , for example.
Of course, there's a lot more going on in terms of extraordinary natural conditions, including the tornadoes here in America, and the volcano in Chile, and of course the Myanmar cyclone and the dreadful matter of the blocked recovery efforts.

Back during the 1st Gulf War, some of the best and most immediate coverage of events was on NPR . Yes, if you had CNN you could watch the whole war LIVE on TV for the first time, including wall-to-wall coverage of Pete, Bernie, and that other guy huddling under a table in a hotel in Baghdad during the shelling. It was because of CNN that most of the world saw the smart bomb footage of the trip through the window which sold the American people on the concept of precision bombing - a concept I'm sure the people of Sadr City would've liked to have seen over the past few weeks - and thus, the war.

Death toll in the China quake is now tallied at 12,000, but reports of landslides and missing villages near the epicenter suggest the final number will be much, much higher. I would not be surprised if an honest accounting reaches six figures. This was a very serious temblor, close to surface in a mountainous area where weak substrates increase the likelihood of slope failures. In fact the quake was so forceful that it disrupted the tiltmeters on Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano, hours after the original shock.

The earthquake in China and the cyclone in Burma are tragic events for the people involved, as they are a contrast in response. The BBC reports that the earthquake may have killed 12,000 people, but there is a major search and rescue operation under weigh. It is as they suggest, "Chaotic, yet organized" . As far as I know the Chinese have not refused international relief assistance and aid, whereas that is exactly what the Burmese Government has done. By delaying assistance they have effectively considerably worsened the situation.

A new report says we don't have more women in politics because they just aren't that interested:
Extensive research shows that when women run for office, they perform just as well as men. Yet women remain severely under-represented in our political institutions. In this report, we argue that the fundamental reason for women's under-representation is that they do not run for office.

Today while running errands I was listening to NPR and there was a report from China. The reporter (Melissa Block of All Things Considered) was at a middle school that collapsed during the earthquake. Teenagers were buried beneath the rubble and had been for hours, and disorganization had caused devastating delays. Parents watched as bodies were recovered and rushed forward to see if it was theirs. At one point the reporter reminds the listeners that these would have been the only child in the family because of the law limiting families to one child (and I have to admit, that hadn't occurred to me).
