Statistics have a way of smashing punditry :
In hypothetical general election head-to-heads, Obama leads McCain by slim 51 to 44 percent margin, with the public split 49 percent for Clinton to McCain's 46 percent. Against McCain, Obama does better than Clinton with African Americans, those with college degrees or greater education and among younger voters. Clinton, however, draws more support than does Obama against McCain among older white voters, white women and whites with family incomes under $50,000 a year.

There's a raft of campaign-related items yesterday and today for you to comment on.
The latest USA Today/Gallup poll shows that a majority of Democrats across the country don't want Hillary to drop out. Furthermore, a majority want Obama to unify the party by having Hillary as his running mate. Although this will never happen, what may very well happen is for Obama to select a Hillary supporter from a key state as his running mate, like Ohio's popular governor Ted Strickland .

What follows is a list compiled with the help of my New Yorker colleague Richard Brody. These hundred titles are meant to provide a broad sampling of jazz classics and wonders across the music's century-long history. Early New Orleans jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, modal jazz, hard bop, free jazz, third stream, and fusion are all represented, though not equally. We have tried not to overdo it with expensive boxed sets and obscure imports; sometimes it couldn't be helped. We have also tried to strike a balance between healthy samplings of the innovative giants (Armstrong, Ellington, Parker, Davis, Coltrane, etc.

American politics is just so interesting, innit?
Former US congressman Bob Barr has announced plans to run for president on the Libertarian Party's ticket, in a move some analysts say could hurt Republican presumptive nominee John McCain.
This is bad news for McCain. As pointed out in the article, Barr will steal those conservative votes that McCain desperately needs and is relying on, votes from conservatives who aren't too happy with the Republican nominee for various reasons.
Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running.

1) Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr formally jumped into the White House race Monday as a candidate for the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination. He'll split the Republican libertarian vote.
2) Ron Paul isn't going away and his supporters keep trying to reclaim the Republican party. This year the Democrats are more united than the Republicans.
3) George Bush, the most unpopular president in American history, is more damaging to McCain than Jeremiah Wright is to Barack Obama. All Democrats have to do is keep linking them together, putting McCain in a fix.

But the big race is in Mississippi, where Democrat Travis Childers may end up beating Republican Greg Davis in a special election. This is a very Republican seat, and a loss here would really signal the disgust with which the entire country sees the GOP. The country is nearly united in its belief that the country is seriously on the wrong track, and Republicans are very late to the game in recognizing this. Indeed, even while they are desperately trying to rebrand the party as offering "change you deserve" (is that a threat?
