Ralph Z. Hallow has the latest on Bob Barr's presidential bid: Republicans are grabbing him by the collar and begging him not to run. Figuratively speaking. Mr. Barr says even people who have tried to dissuade him understand why he thinks it important to raise issues from what he calls a "genuinely conservative" perspective and to offer alternatives to the positions of the two major-party candidates.

With the prospect of Bob Barr running for president on the Libertarian ticket growing stronger with each passing day, many Republicans, while conceding that he has the right to run, can understand why he is running and agreeing that McCain is not Conservative, are urging Barr not to run anyway :
Former Rep. Bob Barr says a number of Republicans have been trying to persuade him not to run for president on the Libertarian Party ticket, but none has given him a convincing reason.
The former Republican congressman from Georgia formed an exploratory committee last month and told The Washington Times that he has since been subjected to the behind-the-scenes pressure from Republicans not to run.

I don't like ideologies. Many theories have some purchase on the truth, but taken to their extremes they make you blind. They also can become cults.
That includes libertarianism--for all its vaunted freedom and respect for the individual. Much of it is attractive, but followed through to its conclusions it is almost solipsistic. No man is an island, as that British fellow said. So I appreciated Glenn Reynold's review of Ron Paul's book today, with Glenn's differentiation between Rombardian and Heinleinian libertarians.

Although I wouldn't consider the nomination his, yet. For a while, I would have said it was his for the taking. But many libertarians, and enthusiasts from the Ron Paul Revolution, might find this unsatisfactory: "In a news conference, Barr said 'only a fool' would specify a date and timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. But he said it's 'extremely important' and in the best interest of national defense to draw down dramatically the US troop presence in Iraq and decrease the military and political footprint in Iraq.

Former Republican Congressman Bob Barr is declaring his bid for the Libertarian Party's nomination for president today. Barr, who is perhaps most well-known for his high-profile role in the Clinton impeachment proceedings, left the Republican Party in 2006 and says that his run for the presidency will provide voters with a "genuinely conservative" alternative to John McCain. A recent Zogby poll had Barr taking three percent of the vote in a general election match-up between Obama and McCain. As you might expect, Republicans are trying to convince Barr not to run .

His candidacy throws a wild card into the White House race that many believe could peel away votes from Republican Sen. John McCain given the candidates' similar positions on fiscal policy.

It's so much fun to watch irony play out in real time. Today's installment: Bob Barr, one of the leaders of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, has now decided that he's going to do the Democrats the biggest favor possible.
He's running for president .
Barr has a enough of a national profile that he could prove a real annoyance to John McCain. Barr won't win any states, but he could be a factor in purple states that both sides really need to win.
Bob Barr: the Ralph Nader of the right.

They hope to demonstrate their disagreements with McCain vocally at the convention through platform fights and an attempt to get Paul a prominent speaking slot. Paul, who's running unopposed in his home Texas district for an 11th House term, still has some $5 million in war funds and has instructed his followers that their struggle is not about a single election, but a longterm revolution for control of the Republican Party.
I'm sure John McCain is thrilled about this. But wait, it gets worse !

American politics is just so interesting, innit?
Former US congressman Bob Barr has announced plans to run for president on the Libertarian Party's ticket, in a move some analysts say could hurt Republican presumptive nominee John McCain.
This is bad news for McCain. As pointed out in the article, Barr will steal those conservative votes that McCain desperately needs and is relying on, votes from conservatives who aren't too happy with the Republican nominee for various reasons.
Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running.

As ever, it was the people calling out sexism and/or anti-FW policies who were charged with creating division among progressives, as opposed to the people engaging in sexism and their defenders.
But wait a minute. I think I know how to get us out of this mess:

My friend's racist mother is hardly alone. Tomorrow's Washington Post isn't even talking about her and the women she plays mah jong with and they're not even talking about South Florida. Racism is very much alive and well, and all stoked up by certain politicians looking to exploit hatred and divisiveness for their own career purposes. And it didn't need all that much stoking.

It will be interesting to see how Bob Barr's independent run on the Libertarian ticket will affect the outcomes in the West. He certainly offers a Perot-like protest vote for hordes of disaffected Republicans in states like Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and the Dakotas. Barr hails from Georgia, which along with Mississippi, is one of the states where a strong right-leaning third party vote, combined with record black turnout, could put a Deep Southern state in play for Obama.

Hardball got into that, tonight.
The consensus pick for Obama among the Democrat guests was the crossover pick -- Senator Chuck Hegel.
This is especially interesting because Hegel was the odds-on favourite to be McCain's running mate in 2000, had he won the GOP nomination (in a good year for Republicans).
But this might be a mirage -- just like the Kerry-McCain 2004 ticket was. (If it weren't, it'd be a way for Obama to cast his moderate creds in stone -- no-one could paint him as being far to the left with a pro-life conservative Republican as his running mate.
