This is one of the stranger assumptions made about text messaging pricing. Via the NY Times The Lede Blog.
"Nigel Bannister, a space scientist at the University of Leicester in Britain, has concluded that sending a text message costs at least four times as much as transmitting scientific data from the Hubble telescope ."
Dr Nigel Bannister's calculations were used for the Channel 4 Dispatches program "The Mobile Phone Rip-Off".
He worked out the cost of obtaining a megabyte of data from Hubble - and compared that with the 5p cost of sending a text.

"The maximum size for a text message is 160 characters, which takes 140 bytes because there are only 7 bits per character in the text messaging system, and we assume the average price for a text message is 5p. There are 1,048,576 bytes in a megabyte, so that's 1 million/140 = 7490 text messages to transmit one megabyte. At 5p each, that's £374.49 per MB - or about 4.4 times more expensive than the 'most pessimistic' estimate for Hubble Space Telescope transmission costs."

Last week, one of the greatest thing that ever happened to me took place: I lost my cell phone. I'm pretty sure it's near (but not in) the lake. I've spent a week without the phone and couldn't be happier. I can still check my messages by dialing the number and using my remote password. I just can't be interrupted with phone calls. Too bad eventually I'll have to replace my phone. The upside to having my phone is being able to talk to my wife on my commutes to and from work but it's been really nice just checking for messages occasionally.

You know how the mobile carriers charge you a couple cents to SMS a few characters' worth of text over their network? When you add it up, you're paying about a zillion bucks a meg for that traffic -- seriously! A space scientist from Leicester has calculated that SMS data is four times more expensive than receiving data from the Hubble space telescope.
He worked out the cost of obtaining a megabyte of data from Hubble - and compared that with the 5p cost of sending a text.
He said: "The bottom line is texting is at least 4 times more expensive than transmitting data from Hubble, and is likely to be substantially more than that.

There's an interesting story
on the wires this morning in which it's claimed that UK SMS rates are higher
than the cost of downloading data from the orbiting Hubble space telescope.
According to Dr Nigel Bannister's calculations, it costs four times as much
to send a character via SMS as it does to receive one from the Hubble.
Quite honestly, I think that Dr Bannister's calculations are extremely conservative,
allowing 160 characters per message whereas I strongly suspect that the average
SMS message is far shorter than the allowed maximum.
