So, this afternoon I was standing in my host's 4th floor office, checking out a map of China, when I felt the building sway. Or did it? I asked the others in the office - no one else felt anything. I felt fine, so it really didn't make sense that it could be a dizzy spell.
The "building is swaying" sensation continued off and on over the next few minutes.
Shortly after, the text messages began to come in.
Apparently, when you come from a earthquake prone zone, you don't notice the small tremors, like those generated over a distance.

Mark Tran at the Guardian Unlimited's newsblog notes a drastic change between the Chinese government's official reaction to today's 7.9 magnitude earthquake and similar events in the past, seeming to suggest that their response is related to the uncontrollable scope of the Internet. I arrived in Beijing yesterday afternoon. We landed shortly before the earthquake struck Sichuan province; I didn't notice anything at the airport, but of coure it was felt in various parts of Beijing.
The flight was good - long, long, long, but improved by (a) a gratis upgrade to Business Class 1 and (b) a thoroughly congenial neighbour: CFO of a pharma business, an old China hand, and a delightful conversationalist. I learned about the major earthquake in Western China from Scoble who posted about it ahead of most news media. New Scientist recently had an article that I wrote about on the New Florence blog titled Emergency 2.0 - about how social media is trumping traditional information sources when it comes to disasters. But this is not about bragging about Twitter.
It is nice to see the Chinese leaders immediately declare an "all-out" relief effort. Contrast this to what the Myanmar leaders have been doing with their disaster and some would argue how badly we handled Katrina.

I learned of the 7.8 earthquake in south eastern China today via Michael Darragh's Twitter stream - our Digital Influence team member in Shanghai. Horribly, as many as 900 students may be buried, the BBC Reports . While I don't want to turn such a terrible event into a communications object lesson, I see one of the true benefits of Twitter in the early twits out of China. It reminded me of following the blog of the tech guy during the Katrina crisis.

The Chinese earthquake in Sichuan Province (with an epicenter about 90km away from Chengdu ) became personal today while talking to a Chinese staffer today. I shared with her some of the observed tactics I've seen regarding technology and disasters - such as use of IM and SMS to reach people.
It appears that the internet is doing a fine job of keeping people connected and informed, as it had during 9/11, the Madrid and London bombings, the 2005 Tsunami, and the Virginia Tech Shootings.

Plus the original shows have also gotten dumber. There are 9 shows of tv that I watch, and only 4 of those are original shows, 5 are real reality shows. Like Jon & Kate Plus 8 and Deadliest Catch. Television sucks anymore.
