So, this afternoon I was standing in my host's 4th floor office, checking out a map of China, when I felt the building sway. Or did it? I asked the others in the office - no one else felt anything. I felt fine, so it really didn't make sense that it could be a dizzy spell.
The "building is swaying" sensation continued off and on over the next few minutes.
Shortly after, the text messages began to come in.
Apparently, when you come from a earthquake prone zone, you don't notice the small tremors, like those generated over a distance.

This is one of the stranger assumptions made about text messaging pricing. Via the NY Times The Lede Blog.
"Nigel Bannister, a space scientist at the University of Leicester in Britain, has concluded that sending a text message costs at least four times as much as transmitting scientific data from the Hubble telescope."
Dr Nigel Bannister's calculations were used for the Channel 4 Dispatches program "The Mobile Phone Rip-Off".
He worked out the cost of obtaining a megabyte of data from Hubble - and compared that with the 5p cost of sending a text.

Before I write anything else, let me emphasize that I believe the real news here is a major earthquake . As I write this, the news reports indicate 900 high schools students are trapped beneath rubble. As a parent, I know where my mind and heart are as I read such news.
Admittedly, how the news broke on this story is an extremely esoteric sidebar, however for those who are passionate users and observers of online media and the way in which participants in an event can "broadcast" their observations, the role of Twitter as a form of first responder medium in this tragedy is already being analyzed in the technosphere (good examples:

Mark Tran at the Guardian Unlimited's newsblog notes a drastic change between the Chinese government's official reaction to today's 7.9 magnitude earthquake and similar events in the past, seeming to suggest that their response is related to the uncontrollable scope of the Internet. After all, how could officials keep a lid on an incident that within seconds of happening was already covered on Twitter and in blogs like Shanghaiist ?

I learned about the major earthquake in Western China from Scoble who posted about it ahead of most news media. New Scientist recently had an article that I wrote about on the New Florence blog titled Emergency 2.0 - about how social media is trumping traditional information sources when it comes to disasters. But this is not about bragging about Twitter.
It is nice to see the Chinese leaders immediately declare an "all-out" relief effort. Contrast this to what the Myanmar leaders have been doing with their disaster and some would argue how badly we handled Katrina.
