Lichtblau was himself a target after he co-authored the 2005 NSA surveillance story. And Philip Shenon was one of the two reporters who had his phone records subpoened in the Valerie Plame leak investigation (the other was Judith Miller). I don't know the official standards for journalistic ethics, but it seems pretty fishy to me that Lichtblau & Shenon didn't disclose their background in the story.

When Indiana passed a voter ID law, it was ostensibly to protect the integrity of the voting process. What better way to prevent voter fraud than to require those participating in an election to produce identification?
Was there any evidence of a voter-fraud scourge in Indiana? No. Would the law make it harder for "certain kinds" of voters (i.e., the elderly, minorities, and the poor) to participate? Yes. Did this look a whole lot like Republican lawmakers trying to discourage likely Democratic voters from taking part in elections?

Vice President Dick Cheney, hard as he tries, is just not a very popular man. So it wasn't surprising to hear the rumors that he wouldn't even be attending the Republican convention in September. John McCain doesn't want to have Cheney's unpopularity tied to him -- a recent poll showed only 23 percent of Americans have a positive opinion of the vice president, and that's a very, very heavy anchor for McCain to carry dangling from his neck.
Now it turns out that Cheney will be attending the convention after all.

It seems that Missouri wants to live up to its state nickname, by proposing to pass a requirement that prospective voters not merely show identification, but actual proof of citizenship not only to vote, but to register to vote.
Obviously, much publicity has surrounded the Supreme Court's recent upholding of Indiana's stringent photo identification law for voters, a rule which excluded a dozen nuns from voting there, but the war-to-make-sure-that-the-majority-will-never-prevails continues.

Last month, when the Supreme Court upheld Indiana's voter ID law -- thought to be one of the stricter laws of its kind -- legal commentators speculated that the decision would embolden advocates of voter ID laws, paving the way for even stricter ID laws, and, of course, more litigation.
It didn't take long. This week, reports the NYT's Ian Urbina, lawmakers in Missouri are expected to support a constitutional amendment to enable election officials to require proof of citizenship -- not merely a government-issued card -- from anyone registering to vote.

As if last week's Supreme Court ruling that it was not unconstitutional to require photo IDs at the time of voting weren't bad enough, Missouri is taking disenfranchisement one step further. A constitutional amendment is on the ballot stating that in order to register to vote you must prove citizenship. You must present, let's say, a birth certificate.
Sponsors of the amendment - which requires the approval of voters to go into effect, possibly in an August referendum - say it is part of an effort to prevent illegal immigrants from affecting the political process.

I'm of two minds about requiring photo ID in order to vote. I mean, yes, nearly everyone has photo ID - whether it's a driver's license or a non-driver's license. I don't know anyone who doesn't have one or the other [that I know of anyway]. On the other hand, I realize there are always going to be people who don't have any reason to have a license - nuns and other religious folk, for instance. I've heard that requiring photo ID may discriminate against low income folk...I guess if they can't afford to get their non-driver's license, I can understand.

I've written exhaustively about the myth of voter fraud , that it isn't a problem, that it's used by Republicans to discourage voters with likely Democratic leanings from going to the polls. The conservative SCOTUS rubber-stamped the practice , allowing states to address a problem that doesn't exist at the cost of chasing away a number of voters from the polls. At the time of the court decision, Stanford law professor Rick Hasen wrote:
...I am disappointed by how cursory that opinion was in its review of the state's interest in light of the highly partisan atmosphere of election administration, and I fear that, despite the Stevens-Kennedy-Roberts' opinion's best intentions, this opinion will be read as a green light for the enactment of more partisan election laws in an attempt to skew outcomes in close elections.

While it's unlikely he'll have a material impact in many states, it's always possible that in a particular swing state, he could cost McCain a victory. There is a faction of the GOP that despises the Bush/Cheney neocon-"imperial executive" approach to governance, and yet many of these voters would be unwilling to vote for Obama. To the extent McCain continues to sell himself as a Bush third term on the neocon agenda, Barr gives these folks an alternative (even if it is a symbolic protest vote).
