Is This the "Cedar Revolution" Bush and Sharon Wanted? A few months ago there was a bunch of excitement about how the Bush administration's policies toward the Middle East had led to the resignation of the pro-Syrian government in Lebanon. At the time I anticipated that what was an understandable reaction ...

UN resolutions have called on Hezbollah, which fields one of the most formidable fighting forces in the Middle East, to disarm and cede military control in the south to the multi-sectarian Lebanese Army. The problem is that there isn't any power that can disarm Hezbollah, and it has no interest in forfeiting its military power.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, on whose troops Hizbullah just opened a can of whoop ass, wants everyone to know he's not intimidated by Hizbullah, despite the fact his government caved in to their demands.
He also wants everyone to know who the real enemy is.
Guess who.
"What Hizbullah did is a coup," Siniora said Saturday. "Hizbullah has become the problem of all of Lebanon. We are not scared of its weapons."
Later Saturday, an opposition statement said Hizbullah and its allies will end all armed presence in Beirut after the Lebanese army overturned government measures against the group.

"Everything that happens there is the responsibility of Hizbullah. The country is controlled by this terror organization and its government has become irrelevant," Ramon said at the weekly cabinet meeting.

What is happening in Lebanon? What is the object of Hezbollah's current offensive? Why now? Among the most clarifying items I have found addressing these questions are "Lebanon's third civil war" by Michael Totten and "The question of power" by Jonathan Spyer. Totten writes: As long as Hezbollah gets what it wants, taking over all of Lebanon is unnecessary, as well as most likely impossible. But this is still a coup d'etat of a sort. What happened is, literally, a blow against the state. Until this week, Hezbollah existed both inside and beside the state.

Just when I was about to get to bed and doing my bedtime news round I came across the funniest political statement of the year so far. If it is that funny, then as you may have figured out, it has to do with Arabs politicians. This time is from Lebanon. The Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Saniora has stated : "Hezbollah did to Beirut what Israel didn't dare" . Of course if you haven't got the joke in the statement, then it's either you don't have a sense of humor and may god be with your spouse during your dull .

"Oops" can describe much of what's happened in Lebanon since early 2005. To be ever-so-slightly generous to nitwits like Brooks, in 2005-2006 there was some cause for optimism about reform movements in the Arab countries and the Middle East. As Economist Middle East editor Max Rodenbeck explains in a review of the new book by WaPo reporter Robin Wright, in those years there were signs of reform from Morocco and Egypt through Lebanon, Syria and Iran.

Israel announced that it will not intervene in the clashes currently occurring throughout Lebanon, but that they are "closely watching developments" there. Israeli jets flew over South Lebanon today, which just goes to show that Israel's idea of keeping an eye on developments isn't confined to watching CNN.
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the Israelis aren't planning to take any immediate action. They don't have any major allies in this country, and any military campaign would only undermine the position of the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL, which Israel depends on to keep Hezbollah away from its southern border.
