If this screenshot is legit, then you'll be able to turn 3G data off to conserve battery life on the new iPhone . Apple sure has thought of everything, huh?
The image was posted on a blog called Chronic Productions which, after a cursory search, appears to have little (if anything) to do with Dr. Dre and more to do with software development.
AppleInsider reminds us all that Steve Jobs cited poor battery life "as one of the primary reasons his company passed on the inclusion of the [3G] technology in the inaugural iPhone models," so perhaps this setting is his way of splitting the difference.

Every time Apple releases an update to the iPhone SDK, developers dig through the documentation, APIs, and the beta firmware to search for clues about new or updated features. Apple Insider reports that one such developer with nothing better to do on a lazy weekend combed through the latest firmware and discovered network settings and related variables to 3G support.
The settings are currently disabled in the firmware, but developer Chronic Productions found a way to enable a preferences screen, which provides an option to enable 3G networking.

In a posting to its blog site on Saturday, independent developer Chronic Productions notes the discovery of several 3G-related strings in beta 5 of the upcoming iPhone firmware, and also publishes the below screenshot extracted from the distribution's Preferences binary.

Given that the rumours of a new iPhone model are getting more steam and that there's mounting evidence that the 3G iPhone will be here real soon (as evidenced by stories discussing 3G preferences in the SDK ).

The iPhone's recently released firmware 2.0 Beta 5 has a 3G on off switch for users. Underneath, there's a warning that 3G browsing will kill your battery faster. While that's more proof of the upgraded hardware we already expect, what I find most interesting is the manual control. It's not too late to change it, but I was hoping that Apple would approach the 3G/2G power consumption and speed tradeoffs by having an automatic toggle for 2G and 3G:
It could have a smart mode that would turn 3G off to save battery for background email downloading, weather checking and standby; and then turn it on for YouTube, maps, web browsing and iTunes music store downloading.

It wasnât a major surprise for any of us that the 5th beta release of the iPhone would surface the 3G settings purely because the next iPhone release is a 3G enabled version. The only good thing regarding this news thus is the revelation that all iPhone users that would wish for a longer battery â"life are advised to disable the 3G service. Those six hours of internet usage will surely not be a possibility if you choose to do otherwise, for a 3G sanction on your phone would only help it to survive for 3 hours at the max.

We all know it's coming. Steve Jobs said so . AT&T said so . Everyone and their blog has posted so. But it's still super sweet to see Apple code confirming it!
Apple Insider (via Chronic Productions) brings word that deep delving the latest iPhone SDK firmware has yet again revealed buried treasure. This time, Beta 5 gives up the strings for 3G:
Most notable is a setting that will allow users of the second-generation iPhone -- expected for an unveiling sometime in the coming weeks -- to disable 3G access in favor of prolonging the handset's battery life.
