I think it was a couple of weeks ago when McCain aide Mark McKinnon, who said he'd step aside if Obama won the Democratic nomination, suggested the two presidential candidates are respectful and high-minded enough that they could travel across the country, holding un-moderated debates. As I understood it, McKinnon wasn't making a serious proposal, so much as he was making a point about why he likes Obama and McCain.
Nevertheless, it seems like the debate idea is being bandied about quite a bit lately.

The NYTimes reports : "In a sign of what could be an extremely unusual fall campaign, the two sides [McCain and Obama] said Saturday that they would be open to holding joint forums or unmoderated debates across the country in front of voters through the summer."

So who's right? Hint: not John McCain. Writing this month in Foreign Affairs, Steven Simon notes in The Price of the Surge (bolded mine):
Unfortunately, such claims misconstrue the causes of the recent fall in violence and, more important, ignore a fatal flaw in the strategy. The surge has changed the situation not by itself but only in conjunction with several other developments:

Just in case you needed any more evidence that John McCain is planning to run away from his party and president in the November election, senior adviser Charlie Black put any doubts to rest this weekend. In Sunday's New York Times , Black described McCain, as "slightly right-of-center." Apparently, with the Republican nomination now safely secured, McCain the self-proclaimed "foot soldier in the Reagan revolution" is trying to reverse the hard right turn he took for the GOP primaries.

Well, it beats " developing phrases ". Here's a glimpse of the strategies Obama and McCain are expected to offer for the fall election. Republicans will seek to portray Mr. Obama as out of touch with many voters on issues like abortion and gay rights. Some of Mr. McCain's advisers said they also thought that Mr. Obama had displayed a number of vulnerabilities as a candidate that they would seek to exploit: they argued that he was prone to becoming irritated when tired or pressed on tough questions, that he had trouble connecting with voters in smaller settings and that he had run a campaign light on substance.

There's a good front-page article in today's NYT that sketches out both Obama and McCain's coming campaign strategies (McCain is a continuation of the Bush era, Obama is out of touch with middle America); how both candidates are going to focus on Independent and Hispanic voters ( Oh my god, O, pick Richardson!

The NYTimes has a good article about the strategies for McCain and Obama for the fall election . The Obama strategists make no mention of winning over women (I agree...little chance women will jump to the anti-choice McCain), but instead will be focusing on Latinos. Beyond that, aides to the two men said Latino voters would be central to victory in a swath of Western states now viewed as prime battlefields, including Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico....

Obama has moved on to the general election , begun using hard-hitting attacks and has focused in on how he'll beat John McCain , and frankly, we all should do the same. Clinton can continue to look to dig up dirt on Obama (I don't know if I trust Carl Bernstein's reporting on this) or whatever it is she feels she has to do, but none of it is too relevant. With both Obama and Clinton defeating McCain in early polls despite being entirely focused on one another, with the structural advantages for Democrats among young people, independents and Hispanics (McCain is already running Spanish-language ads to try and overcome this gap), and with Obama seeking to capitalize on this new energy in the party with a massive voter registration and mobilization campaign, there's no need to worry about electability.

McCain has suggested that Obama and McCain hold a series of unmoderated town hall-style debates in front of live audiences . Obama said it's a great idea. The New Republic and others say Obama shouldn't agree to these type of debates because McCain will benefit from the large crowds and buzz, he'll appear pleasantly moderate instead of a Bush/Cheney clone, and he'll get free publicity to overcome his fund raising disadvantages to Obama. I disagree.
I fail to see the "free rider" issue here.

WaPo/The Trail : Hillary's fixation on low income, under-educated, older women voters has given short shrift to another large group of voters: middle class independent voters. Oregon is full of them and they are in Obama's camp (as many have been in other states).
