Great Choice, Senator McCain!

The prospect of choosing Manafort created anxiety in the campaign because of his long history of representing controversial foreign clients, including Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos. More recently, he served as chief political consultant to Viktor Yanukovich, the former Ukrainian prime minister who has been widely criticized for alleged corruption and for his close ties to Russia's Vladimir Putin-a potential embarrassment for McCain, who in 2007 called Putin a "totalitarian dictator.

This weekend, we learned that one of McCain's campaign managers (he has several) had ties to a firm had represented the Burmese military Junta. As a result of the media scrutiny, he was forced to resign. In addition, a McCain aide chosen (by McCain) to be in charge of running the GOP Convention also was also forced to resign for the same reason.
When his entire campaign is being run, at its highest levels, by lobbyists -- particularly when those lobbyists are conducting their lobbying business on the so-called "Straight Talk Express" bus, you can expect to see more of this kind of thing as the campaign goes on.

"It's fair to say that I did not win Miss Congeniality," Senator McCain said here earlier this week in a debate in South Carolina. "I've taken on the iron triangle: special interests, campaign finance and lobbying. I did not make a lot of friends."
John McCain: Portrayed by himself -- and also by the media, which loved/loves to fawn over McCain's supposed "straight talk" and "independence" -- as a heroic crusader against money in politics, 527s, "pay to play," special interest groups, lobbyists, etc.

Three of the right wing extremists mentioned above were in the news, together again, this morning. Today's NY Times in a story called Official Chosen by McCain to Run Convention Resigns brings to light the relationship between right-wing Republicans and the brutal Burmese junta. The ill-starred Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-- first Larry Craig's romantic trysts in the airport toilets, then the GOP nomination descending on McCain by default and now the Myanmar connection-- was supposed to be run-- thanks to lobbyist-lovin' John McCain-- by Arizonan Doug Goodyear.

Fortunately, the New York Times reports today that Doug Goodyear, the man handpicked by McCain to help coordinate the GOP national convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul in September had to resign after a Newsweek article by Michael Isikoff revealed that Goodyear's consulting firm, DCI, six years ago earned $348,000 from the military junta in Myanmar (formerly Burma), the repressive regime that until recently pulled a George W. Bush and spurned international offers of aid in the wake of the cyclone that killed countless tens of thousands of Burmans.

For five years boomers have been asking, "Why are the kids not in the streets screaming about the war the way we were?" The simple answer: no draft. But as Morley Winograd and Michael D. Hais show in "Millennial Makeover," their book about the post-1982 American generation, that energy has been plowed into quieter social activism and grand-scale social networking, often linked on the same Web page.

Regional campaign manager for McCain, Doug Davenport, also steps down due to ties to the DCI Group. Doug had run DCI's lobbying practice before signing on with McCain last month to run Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Kentucky and West Virginia for McCain. [ source ]
