Another person driven insane by religion: 'My daughter deserved to die for falling in love' . Two weeks ago, The Observer revealed how 17-year-old student Rand Abdel-Qader was beaten to death by her father after becoming infatuated with a British soldier in Basra. In this remarkable interview, Abdel-Qader Ali explains why he is unrepentant - and how police backed his actions. For Abdel-Qader Ali there is only one regret: that he did not kill his daughter at birth. 'If I had realised then what she would become, I would have killed her the instant her mother delivered her,' he said with no trace of remorse.

PZ Myers links to a story of truly monstrous religious madness : "Two weeks after The Observer revealed the shocking story of Rand Abdel-Qader, 17, murdered because of her infatuation with a British solider in Basra, southern Iraq, her father is defiant. Sitting in the front garden of his well-kept home in the city's Al-Fursi district, he remains a free man, despite having stamped on, suffocated and then stabbed his student daughter to death." And that isn't all. Read PZ's post for more details that will increase your despair for humanity.

The other week I wrote about the disgusting spectacle of how a father murdered his only daughter for falling in love. Abdel-Qader Ali took his daughters life when some busybody told him she had been seen speaking to a British soldier. The fact that she was employed by her university as an English interpreter appears to have missed him by. Anyway, I wrote about his f-ing ugliness here . What I want to do with this post is to expose his evil mindset which absolves him of committing any crime but instead transfers the guilt to his murdered daughter.

On our way home across Waterloo Bridge I noticed there were some protesters along the Embankment at Somerset House. It was hard to tell what they were protesting about specifically but I saw the word "war" on a few of the signs they were carrying so I assume they were protesting about the Iraq war. No one was paying any attention to them, they were their own audience. As usual. Then I saw the two spectators standing on the bridge in the photo below. I'm not sure what I think about that but I know what I think about this .

It is difficult to say where we draw the line on imposing our beliefs on another culture. This is one of the ethical questions that plagues me; is it wrong for this father, in his firm belief (both religious and traditional) that his killing of his daughter in the name of honor is justifiable? In his own country and culture, it is. Do we then force our beliefs upon a country? One who believes that we are the evil force because we allow such dishonorable events to occur?

Are all cultures equal? I don't think so. I believe in basic human rights, and if a culture deprives people of their rights--and even their life--because those people displease someone else but otherwise do no harm, then that culture is wrong in that area and should be fixed. An example is reported in The Observer in the UK by Afif Sarhan in Basra and Caroline Davies:

Here is a gut-wrenching story from The Guardian about a young Iraqi woman brutally killed by her father and brothers because of an infatuation with a British soldier. The police did not detain the father, and even supported him. By and large, the local community considers such honor killings right and proper. Honor killings, indeed, are quite common throughout the Middle East, and are carried out in Muslim immigrant communities in Western countries as well.

Assuming radical Islam is looking the other way, it will take a thousand years for this culture to come out of its the barbaric basement.
Amazingly, I will get about two or three emails over the next few weeks from people defending this type of behavior. Considering only 30-50 people a day drop by this site that number of sympathetic email is shocking.

We spend billions and our soldiers are killed and maimed trying to bring sanity to a country that appears to not want it.
The Guardian has an article about a father who murdered his 17 year old daughter because she had a crush on a British soldier and had been seen in public with him.
He killed her by pressing his foot into her throat. His sons, called by their horrified mother to restrain him, instead helped him finish her off. They dumped her in a grave, spate on her and congratulated themselves.

17-year-old Iraqi student, Rand Abdel-Qader, was beaten to death by her father and her two brothers for falling in love with a British soldier. The police arrested Abdel-Qader Ali for the murder, but released him two hours later, with congratulations for restoring his family honour. I can't comment further on this story. I don't have the words to respond coherently. These actions ... these animals ... they need another Saddam Hussein. You can read the interview of the murderer at the Guardian's site .

What can I say about the unrepentant murderer of an Iraqi girl whose crime was to be seen talking to a British soldier? Honor killings are not new under the sun, but the details of this beating and choking are heartbreaking, and the fate of the mother of the dead girl remains unresolved. As PZ Myers points out , her father was congratulated for killing his daughter by police, because "they are men and they know what honor is."
