Publius muses on why Hillary's genuinely inevitable campaign machine seemed to keep losing its traction, and comes up with a word that rhymes with frak .
Publius's analysis exactly agrees how I felt back when I was still on the fence. In the beginning I expected Clinton to make some public statement about how her Iraq vote was a stupid move and how at some level she regretted making it.

Why did Hillary lose after having such an advantage coming in? Publius thinks he knows.
I'm sure pundits and historians alike will be arguing for many years about why Clinton - who enjoyed such enormous advantages going in - lost the Democratic primary. (See, e.g., Karen Tumulty ). Personally, I think the explanation is quite simple. Clinton lost the nomination because of Iraq. Period.
Do you agree?

The politicization of the war has mostly been directed at the "neocons" (an undesirable label that is now morally akin to the Hitler Youth), but it can even explain how Hillary failed to win the Democratic primary, as Publius at Obsidian Wings explains. Whoever gets the proverbial "Iraq war" necklace hung around their neck is most likely to be characterized as a nuisance or evil for decades to come. This has terrible ramifications for Iraq vets and other personnel who have served in the military during these troubled times, as the Iraq war's architects will retire to castles invisible in the public eye, but us vets will be amongst the general populace representing an endeavor Americans will resent.

+ Publius has a must-read post on why Iraq doomed the Clinton campaign. All of what he writes is true, but it is missing one thing: in the absence of a better alternative to Clinton, even with Iraq its likely she would have run. Unfortunately for her, and fortunately for us, she happened to find herself in a situation not all that different from many future NBA Hall of Famers in the 1990s - no matter how good they were relative to the rest of the league, they just couldn't beat Michael Jordan's Bulls.
