The Cannes Film Festival is underway. Sean Penn and Natalie Portman were asked if they were going to jump on the Hollywood A-lister bandwagon and endorse Barack Obama. Sean Penn said:
"I don't have a candidate I'm supporting and I'm certainly interested and excited by the hope that Barack Obama is inspiring," he said, but went on to accuse him of a "phenomenally inhuman and unconstitutional" voting record.
"I hope that he will understand, if he is the nominee, the degree of disillusionment that will happen if he doesn't become a greater man than he will ever be," Penn said.

Presumably, he meant to say "47 states." Whether he was just tired, thinking of something else, or just someone who shouldn't do math in public, I don't know. I'm pretty sure he's aware of the correct number, in any case.
Still, people are having fun with this. Marc Ambinder muses that, "if John McCain did this -- if he mistakenly said he'd visited 57 states -- the media would be all up in his grill, accusing him of a senior moment."
DRJ does his own math:
Obama has been to "57 states.

Will Rush, Sean, O'Reilly, weblogs and Sunday morning news show talking heads turn this into the new issue that will dominate 524 1/2 news cycles?
Will Obama have to make a clarification speech about it?
Will it turn up in Republican campaign ads this fall?
I would say….you can count on it (war planning, war policy, the economy, gas prices, health care can all wait a while..).
Details here.
And discussion HERE.

"Barack Obama wants to be president of these 57 United States" from the Los Angeles Times reports that Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama has, with a single remark, expanded the stars on that flag pin by seven in a latest campaign schedule comment. Obama's gaffe caused a noticeable stir online during the day and even the respected Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic anticipated that the political media would kindly write the Democrat's mis-statement off to fatigue. But he wrote if, say, the Republican nominee-to-be had uttered the same silly fatigue flub, it would surely be added to eager suspicions of senility.

Politicians sometimes misspeak. George W. Bush is well-known for it. And if it had been the current president who claimed to have visited 57 states--with one more to go--you'd probably have heard a few dozen jokes about it by now. Perhaps Obama is planning an imperialist presidency, and he accidentally let it slip that we'll soon have a few more states . If so, then maybe he wouldn't be the pushover president I worry he'd be.

Though more easily comprehensible, the comical error (or is it what he truly thought?) in Barack Obama's "57 states" statement (HT Newsbusters' John Stephenson ) is nothing compared to the dangerously wrong "history" he recited in his North Carolina Primary victory speech Tuesday night.

Truman met with Joseph Stalin during and after World War II, but that didn't stop the Soviets from blockading West Berlin or ringing down an iron curtain across eastern Europe, enslaving those nations for almost 50 years. If Potsdam and Yalta are Obama's idea of successful foreign policy, then he obviously hasn't studied 20th century history. Talking with implacable tyrants leads to appeasement, which leads to either war or more implacability of the tyranny in question. Geography must not have been another subject Obama was good at, as he claimed America has 57 , not 50 states .

Bloggers and main stream media alike have been having a bit of fun with Obama's little mistake. My favorite is from Suitably Flip, which has come up with a special 57-star American flag lapel pin in Obama's honor. Given the internet and email rumors that have plagued the Obama campaign about his refusal to wear an American Flag pin on his lapel, this bit of humor is particularly droll. Of course, if George W. had of made this mistake, there would no end to the declarations of further proof of his lack of intelligence and it would join the long list of "Bushisms" that have become so popular among the left-leaning elitists.

The reason I haven't said anything about this latest gaffe of Obama's is because everybody knows these slips of the tongue on the campaign trail happen to all politicians at one time or another.
A couple of thoughts, though, first the most obvious one: If McCain had said this, it would have been covered exhaustively in newspapers all across the country; it would have been evidence of him being an old man "losing his bearings", and it would haunt him relentlessly all the way to election day.

An examination of Mr. Obama's numerous public statements on the subjects indicates that he has consistently condemned Hamas as a "terrorist organization," has not sought the group's support and does not advocate immediate, direct or unconditional negotiations with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president. (emphasis mine)
So, like what Obama said at this CNN debate:
Question: In 1982, Anwar Sadat traveled to Israel, a trip that resulted in a peace agreement that has lasted ever since. In the spirit of that type of bold leadership, would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?
