A MEDIA COUP IN LEBANON: HEZBOLLAH'S SUBTLE TAKEOVER: "Hezbollah's militant takeover of Beirut and its systematic destruction of the authority of the state and freedom of the press suggests a sophisticated and planned campaign to take power. Some opinion from around the web. Yglesias : Over the past year or so I've heard various voices try to propagate revisionist accounts of Israel's short-lived effort to crush Hezbollah in Lebanon where people tried to argue that the mission was only an apparent failure, but actually succeeded in some sense. I think we can see from events like this that that's total nonsense -- Hezbollah is very much not crushed. Jeffrey Goldberg : Hezbollah has been doing a bang-up job this week undermining Lebanon's future on behalf of its sponsors, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and Syrian intelligence.

It's interesting that the current round of violence started with Sinoara's government trying to take down the Hezbollah military/intelligence communications system.
I don't think the Lebanese state has the capacity to take on Hezbollah. What it may be able to do is tie Hezbollah down while Israel attacks again, presumably through Syria to avoid UNIFIL. According to reports I've seen, most of the fighting on the opposition side seems to be coming from Amal, acting as a screen for the Hezbies.

Christopher Allbritton provides the latest on a Hezbollah-fuelled conflict in Beirut , suggesting it may be a coup. Juan Cole weighs in saying it's 2 steps closer to a civil war . But the link he provides to veteran correspondent Liz Sly includes the big picture:
The last time Lebanese fought street battles on this scale was during the 1975-90 civil war, when Muslims and Christians fought in a variety of combinations. But never did Lebanese Sunnis and Shiites directly clash, making this a dangerous new development, both for Lebanon and for a region rife with Sunni-Shiite fault lines.

A daily round-up of economic news: America's trade deficit fell more than expected in March. The weak dollar continued to boost exports, but the biggest force behind the fall was a drop in imports as the domestic economy weakened. Imports from China were at their lowest level in two years. Oil imports are likely to prevent the deficit from improving much more in future months. Oil shot above $126 per barrel, for yet another new record. Analysts and journalists indicated that a fall in the dollar or political developments in Venezuela could have sparked the increase.

The reports from Beirut look eerily similar not only to scenes from the annals of Lebanese civil war but also to what we saw in Gaza before Hamas's takeover. Again, it looks like well-equipped but unmotivated US-backed militias are surrendering to their disciplined anti-American counterparts. At least this is the impression that one would get from the coverage in Ha'aretz and the Western media. The following description is rather typical:
