Update : CNN is reporting that the Lebanese military is reluctant to intervene in street fighting between pro-Hizbullah forces and supporters of the Seniora government. Aljazeera is also reporting that the Lebanese military has drawn back from flashpoints. It showed one clip of troops facing crowds of young men throwing stones, who were dispersed by tear gas. The overnight street fighting, which the Aljazeera correspondent said does not involve barricades but is rather fluid, was the worst seen in Beirut since the Civil War ended in 1989.

Hizbullah's Nasrallah says that it's a war. Who am I to argue. He wants war, the Lebanese military should oblige him - targeting him personally and not letting up until it has destroyed the terrorist infrastructure that the group and its terror masters have cultivated for far too long. Nasrallah wants to wrap his terror minions up in the flag of Lebanese nationalism, but they're the ones who provoked this fight, and they're the ones who are purposefully interfering in Lebanese sovereignty. They are the threat to Lebanon's survival as an intact nation.

to that area. It looks to me like the battle space for the rest is being carefully prepared, unlike how events unfolded in Basra, and a final showdown is looming in Baghdad. The Mahdi Army is taking a beating right now as they try to stop these preparations and I don't think they will succeed. In fact, I think the end is near for them as any kind of significant military threat.

The rattle of gunfire and crump of exploding rockets that shook the near-deserted streets of Beirut Wednesday seemed to signal the arrival of the long-feared showdown between the Western-backed government and its opponents led by Hizballah. Thick plumes of black smoke from barricades of burning tyres cast a deep pall over the capital, as many Lebanese gloomily pondered whether the country's feuding leaders can pull back from the brink. "Both sides have dug in their heels," said Amal Saad-Ghorayeb, a political analyst and expert on Hizballah.

Hizballah views its communications network as an important weapon in its military struggle against Israel. (See Nick Blanford's story from yesterday " Cell Phone Civil War "). Today, Nasrallah, who in the past has said that Hizballah's weapons are only for use against Israel, ominously declared that his forces would fight an internal battle against the government if it didn't reverse its decisions to shut the mobile phone network and to remove the head of the airport, whom the government suspects of pro-opposition sympathies.

Today I digress from arts matters since the sad news that a new civil war may be underway in Lebanon has made me very upset.
Having briefly lived in Beirut in the late 1990s I can imagine the fear the Lebanese people are experiencing considering the devastating toll the first civil war (1975-1990) had on the country and the wounds from that period that still fester among the populace unresolved and largely ignored.
Thankfully the blogosphere offers us a number of first-person accounts of this (unofficial) war via the English-language Lebanese blogs here and here .

Cal gave a harrowing report in the midst of a gunbattle this morning -- if you haven't seen it, I urge you to head to CNN's video page and check it out . The leader of Hezbollah has declared open war, and that's exactly what may be starting there. Again.
Cal mentions in his report the Green Line that separates Shia communities from Sunni -- I remember Brent Sadler doing a report (originally filmed in 2002 but re-aired last year, I believe) where he walked along that line and showed the pock-marked buildings, their war wounds left as a visible reminder of what that war did to the city.
