Having dropped Apple's iTunes store in a dispute over pricing, NBC Universal will soon start selling downloads of TV shows like The Office and 30 Rock for its Zune media player. If NBC chief Jeff Zucker manages to scrape some sales out of Microsoft's handheld also-ran, it will be a miracle - and the surest proof yet that content, not hardware, is king. Don't hold your breath. Microsoft's Zune has always seemed like a parody of Apple's iPod. Want to buy songs? Well, first you buy "points" from Microsoft, which you can then exchange for music at some bizarre exchange rate.

After news that NBC had asked Microsoft to develop content filtering technology to keep infringing files off the Zune spread like wildfire, Cesar Menendez, a Microsoft employee working on the Zune, said there was no agreement between the television network and the technology company to implement any such plan. We think some folks in the industry were expressing hopes for how the entire industry, not just Microsoft, would come to look at content distribution, and some speculation has ensued. In other words, a bit of wishful thinking on NBC's part.

NBC's still got Steve and iTunes blacklisted (for now), though that hasn't stopped them from making content available to Apple devices. Turns out NBC.com is providing iPhone owners video clips and full episodes (30 Rock, The Office) free, without commercial interuption. Video is selected via Safari and launched within the QuickTime player. Resolution isn't high, but it streams well over WiFi and the price is right. Over EDGE, I had to wait (too long) for a suitable buffer to build - and I wouldn't recommend it.

After bravely turning its back on Apple's iTunes thanks to rows over money and royalties and charges and the like, American telly juggernaut NBC has started releasing its shows via the... Zune shop. What's the Zune shop called? Anyone have a clue? MicroStore? ZuneTunes?
Whatever the Zune shop is called, it now hosts more than 800 NBC-owned 'properties', with shows coming from the likes of Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and VH1. The downloads cost $1.99 each - the same price NBC used to get via iTunes.

The news was so big it was on page B6 of today's Wall Street Journal. Microsoft had a Zune announcement today (read press release ). One aspect of the news is the availability for purchase of some 800 television programs at the Zune marketplace.
The far more interesting (to me, at least) part of the news release had to do with Zune's new social functions. The new features involve online social and sharing functions, a leap forward from the first round of inter-device social functions. What looks to be the best function is the syncing of friends' Zune Cards to your device.

Now we know some (at least) of the reason that NBC pulled its TV shows, etc., out of iTunes and threw its lot in with Zune -- pricing and copyright protection.
In a nutshell, NBC doesn't want to price every one of its show at $1.99 -- which Apple apparently insists they do -- and they want to make sure all material played on these neat little gadgets is protected by copyright -- something Apple is apparently not concerned with, but Microsoft is.

Alright, finally! A step in the video direction for Zune. Starting today Zune now offers a plethora of TV shows for download from the Zune Marketplace. Microsoft really should have been out of the gate way before Apple's ITunes with this stuff because they already had all the content for the 360. These are pretty much the same shows you can get on XBox 360, though not all of them (yet?). My biggest question at this point is: If I bought an episode on 360, do I get it for my Zune? Vice versa?

While this release is definitely a step in the right direction, it's still a bit disappointing that not all of the content found on the Xbox Live Marketplace is available on the Zune Marketplace - notably movie rentals. I think making a better user experience could help. Which the Zune and its related software has suffered from. Adding filters and the problems that will surely come about from this will not make the user experience better and surely will not stop people who will pirate at all.
