Some of us were warning them of these problems before November of 2006. You can see how well that worked out. They need to try doing something besides stuffing their pockets with pork for a change, but how credible will that be by now?

Some House Republicans apparently blew off the recent warning from former Speaker Newt Gingrich that the GOP needs to get its act together to avoid a debacle in the general election. One could nitpick Newt's piece. For example, he places great weight on the loss of former Speaker Dennis Hastert's seat in a special election without recognizing that calling the Republican Party in Illinois a train wreck would be unfair to train wrecks. Moreover, while party ID has shifted significantly to the Democrats, the GOP's generic disadvantages on issues like taxes are likely to largely evaporate in most races by November.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) recently delivered a major-league pep-talk to his Republican caucus, which was very well received. GOP lawmakers gave Boehner a standing ovation, and were all smiles as they looked ahead to the rest of the year. They were led to believe that tying Dems in congressional races to Obama and Pelosi would be a recipe for success, and Republicans might even gain seats this year.
This same Republican caucus was feeling far less jovial during their confab yesterday.

My latest at Pajamas Media is up and let me tell you, it was a labor of love - or a labor anyway.
I had the piece finished around 10:00 PM when Hillary was comfortably ahead by 40,000 votes. Then came the incredible - and ominous - news that the precincts in Lake County, including the city of Gary which is 85% African American, had not reported much of their total. When the mayor of Gary said that the results might be a "shocker," one began to wonder how close the crooks in Chicago's neighboring metropolis and kindred machine could actually make the race.

That's what I have about Dave Reichert's race this year. And I can't shake it. As usual, in no small part thanks to the politics of his district, Reichert finds himself on prominent lists of endangered incumbents . Little surprise there since the 8th CD was a major Democratic target in both 2004 and 2006. But, news that House Republicans are declaring virtually every man for himself is ominous. Reichert has never been a prodigious personal fundraiser, known for his distaste toward making the one-on-one "ask" for coin that is simply part of the job.

The one and only bright spot for House Republicans of late has been the ongoing primary battle between Democratic Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. NRCC chair Tom Cole had fantasized out loud about a " death fight " between Obama and Clinton that would tear the Democrats down, sweep Sen. John McCain into the White House, and with him produce the kind of presidential coattails that could carry House Republicans to victory in November.
But with even official Republican spokesman Tim Russert declaring Obama the presumptive nominee after Clinton's disappointing showing in North Carolina and Indiana, Cole's daydream is fading fast, and his caucus is beginning to wake up to the daunting challenges they face this November.

Already, the GOP leadership is essentially communicating to House members that they are on their own this fall. Color me unimpressed with Newt Gingrich's latest efforts at making himself relevant again. Don't get me wrong, I believe that the GOP needs a whole new emphasis on policy that mimics the kind of shift that the Contract With America represented, but I don't think that Gingrich has any ideas left to offer that are worthy of inclusion. On the national level most operatives seem to think it's a good idea, that to create utter and complete chaos on the Democratic side is a good thing, and I agree. It's not as if at least a third (or more) of conservatives are enthusiastic supporters of the McCain candidacy, and I've long held that perhaps, at least on the national level, it might not be a bad thing if Republicans suffered defeat in November if for no other reason than to get our house back in order .

It could be the types of candidates that the GOP has been consistently nominating for the past couple of years. The candidates have to be about big government mixed with some "social liberalism" (that is regulating marriage on a federal level etc.). These candidates get slaughtered at the polls.
