Appearing on MSNBC on Monday, Terry McAuliffe made a pledge sure to strike fear in the hearts of some Democrats.
McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Committee chairman -- now filling the same title for Hillary Clinton's campaign -- told the network's Norah O'Donnell: We are going through to June 3rd. I know there's been a lot of commentary -- Norah, I can unequivocally tell you we are in through June 3rd.
That date isn't coincidental; it's the day of the last Democratic primary for the year.

Media sources are reporting higher-than-usual voter turnout in North Carolina and Indiana today.
Indiana is experimenting with a new tough law that requires all voters to show a state or federally-approved form of identification in order to vote.
How tough is it?
The AP reports that a group of twelve nuns were turned away from voting by another nun at Saint Mary's Convent in South Bend today because they had no form of identification.
I say let the sisters vote.
They just don't need to make a habit out if it.

The US Supreme Court said that it was legal to demand picture IDs from voters. Now, a gaggle of nuns have been turned away from the polls . Why? Because they are old and don't have drivers licenses. So they cast a provisional vote. Generally, it's about minorities and the elderly and the poor. Now it's about nuns. Good thing the Government hates Catholics too.

It's a disgrace that the Supreme Court upheld Indiana's odious voter ID law. There is already hard evidence that some IN voters, nuns, were not allowed to vote today, but it makes you wonder how many regular voters just didn't bother to show up to the polls because they lacked a government issued ID. This Supreme Court, like Bu$h, will go down in history as shameful, incompetent party hacks

No one could have predicted:
At least 10 retired nuns in South Bend, Ind., were barred from casting regular ballots in Tuesday's Indiana Democratic primary election because they lacked photo IDs required under a state law upheld last week by the U.S. Supreme Court.
[...]
Borkowski said that two of the nuns with whom he spoke ``were very frustrated'' and so upset that they refused to exercise their rights to cast provisional ballots. He said one of the nuns told him that many other elderly nuns living on four floors of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross decided not to vote upon learning that their sisters had been turned away at the poll in their building.

Do you think the CJ and his fellow Catholics on the SCOTUS will pony up a little extra cash for the Religious Retirement Fund this December? Seems like the least they could do after ensuring elderly citizens got the shaft in today's Indiana primary .
I thought Virginia was pretty Stone Age when I moved there. I went to register as a voter in October, only to be told the waiting period was thirty days and I missed the Clinton-Bush-Perot thingy. I could get a gun-heck, I could get lots of guns in that time period.

That should make those good Catholic boys, Roberts, Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas and Alito, very proud. They all supported the Indiana law, of course.

All through history, the political left has agitated to expand the franchise. The left worked and fought to abolish the rules that only allowed white Christian male property holders the right to vote. The political right fought to prevent poor people from voting, to prevent Jews, Blacks, women, young people... And a few weeks ago the rightist Supreme Court gave the thumbs up to a Republican scheme to limit voting in Indiana. We saw the first results of that ruling today.

As Stephanie Mencimer points out , maybe I shouldn't complain about getting carded at CVS for my allergy meds. After all, the plight of people who could be negatively affected by the recent Supreme Court case upholding Indiana's voter ID law ( Crawford v. Marion County Election Board ) is really nothing to sneeze at.
Okay, that was a bit cheesy.
But my point is that access to the ballot is just as important as access to the courts, and this recent Supreme Court decision may make it more difficult for elderly and poor Indiana voters to vote if they don't have i.

In a big speech on Thursday morning, John McCain laid out his vision for what he hopes to have done by the end of his first term as president, if he's elected to the job.
The speech painted a rosy picture, to say the least. With McCain as president, in just four years the war in Iraq will be won and most U.S. troops will have come home, the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, will be stopped, the American economy will be growing, quality of life across the world will be up, the world food crisis will be over, U.

The Supreme Court recently ruled (in a split decision) that the state of Indiana can require voters to present photo identification in order to cast a ballot.
Conservatives cheered with glee .
The problem with such a stipulation is that it in fact present a barrier, preventing citizens from voting simply because they do not have a picture id.
And that, in fact, is exactly what happened earlier today in Indiana as a group of nuns were unable to cast ballots for lack of an id .
Why didn't they just go and get an id?

I seem to recall an early episode of All in the Family - the one focusing on the law firm of Rabinowitz, Rabinowitz and Rabinowitz - that ended with the punch line: You can't beat five nuns in a station wagon.
Indiana's photo ID law is the strictest in the country. The Republican-led effort was designed to combat ballot fraud, said supporters, who also have acknowledged that no case involving someone impersonating a voter at the polls has ever been prosecuted in Indiana.
