Myanmar believes 10,000 dead from cyclone - Yahoo! News
YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar's military junta believes at least 10,000 people died in a cyclone that ripped through the Irrawaddy delta, triggering a massive international aid response for the pariah southeast Asian nation.
After the gross ingratitude demonstrated in the wake of the tsunami disaster in this part of the world a few years back, strangely enough I have very little enthusiasm for leaping to their aid in this latest catastrophe.

I am not sure how many of you have heard this terrible news, but there has been a tremendous tragedy in the nation of Burma, also known as Myanmar. You may also not be aware but the Christian population of Burma is estimated at about 4%, mostly being Baptists and Catholics . And we have mentioned the persecution of Christians there before.
However, today I just wanted to bring to your attention this terrible tragedy as some reports are saying that around 10,000 people have been killed by a very serious cyclone.

Even at the best of times, the Irrawaddy delta is one of the least accessible areas of one of South-East Asiaâs most closed and impenetrable countries. […] It is too soon to know the extent of the destruction, but there is no longer any doubt that a massive humanitarian catastrophe has struck Burma. Cyclone Nargis, with its 120mph winds, coincided with a 12ft-high storm surge. Even last night there was little hard information about the extent of the damage but it seems clear that fields, houses, roads, ditches, houses and entire communities have been blown and washed away.

Oh, Burma. Life just is never easy for you, is it?
Reports now indicate that up to 4,000 people were killed by Cyclone Nargis, which hit this weekend. Those numbers are counts from only two of the five districts hit hardest by the storm, so the death toll may be much higher.
And in the wake of the storm, the junta is letting some foreign aid enter the country, but is still insisting on holding a national referendum on a new constitution in five days. "Out of touch" only begins to describe their sinful lack of compassion.

A powerful cyclone (a hurricane is called a cyclone in the Indian Ocean) has hit Yangon (Rangoon) in the country of Myanmar (formerly Burma). Reports say up to 50,000 casualties ! It's unusual to have a cyclone in this area, much less one this strong. The highest wind gust at the Yangon Airport was 138 mph . 20,000 home have been destroyed. I just watched Laura Bush on BBC News giving a press conference announcing aid for Burma in the aftermath of the cyclone that has killed thousands . She went on to condemn the Burmese government for their actions. I wonder if she is padding out the international
affairs part of her CV for a run to the White House after President Hillary Clinton. At that stage she'll probably be running against Senator Chelsea Clinton.

More than 10,000 people were killed in a devastating cyclone that hit western Burma on Saturday, Foreign Minister Nyan Win has said on state TV. He said his government was ready to accept international assistance. Aid shipments are now being prepared. Thousands of survivors of Cyclone Nargis are lacking shelter, drinking water, power and communications. The United States offered to increase aid offered if Burma agreed to allow a US team access to assess the situation. First Lady Laura Bush, who takes a special interest in Burma, urged Burma to accept $250,000 (£126,000) already allocated for emergency aid, and said more would be available if the team was allowed into the country.

The numbers are all over the place here. Inside sources are expecting the death toll to surpass 10,000. More than 100,000 have been left homeless and I am once again reminded of idiocy in the media. Let's not forget, just months ago, when monks were being slaughtered by the government in this same country , we were referring to Myanmar as Burma. Now it's Myanmar across the board and the plight of the monks is all but forgotten. Sure, the celebrity crowd has jumped on the bandwagon but the story is no longer dominating headlines.

On Saturday western Burma was hit with what might have been the worst cyclone to date in the history of mankind. Cyclone nargis hit an area where 2.4 million people live and all five zones of this area including Rangoon/Yangon the capital have been declared disaster zones. The extent of the damage is such that entire towns have been blown away with the inhabitants and thousands of buildings flattened. The death toll has currently risen to 10,000 people which is ghastly but is still going up.
Cyclone Nargis had winds with speeds up to 190 kph and a sea surge which literally took everything in its path along with it.

Perhaps advertising for a new car isn't exactly … apropos when we're talking about possibly 10,000 people dying in a storm? Maybe the BBC should rethink its advertising approach on that point.
Otherwise the Flash plugin works great. On Tombuntu's suggestion , I might hunt down swfdec next, and see if it will go.
