The unanswered questions about Barack Obama's 20-year friendship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright have seriously damaged Obama's poll numbers .
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama's standing has been significantly damaged by the controversy over his former pastor, according to USA Today/Gallup poll published on Monday.
The poll showed Hillary Clinton leading Obama 51 percent to 44 percent nationally among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independent voters, in contrast to a CBS News/New York Times survey released on Sunday that had Obama leading Clinton by 12 points.

The erosion of support among Democrats and independents raises the stakes in Tuesday's Indiana and North Carolina primaries, which represent a chance for Obama to reassert his claim to a Democratic nomination that seems nearly in his grasp. A defeat in Indiana and a close finish in North Carolina, where he's favored, could fuel unease about his ability to win in November. Such results also could help propel Hillary Rodham Clinton's uphill campaign all the way to the Democratic convention in August.

Yesterday we ran a post about a CBS/New York Times poll that said Democratic Senator Barack Obama has rebounded after denouncing his former pastor -- but a new Gallup poll reaches a different conclusion: it concludes Obama has been wounded among independent voters and Democrats.
It also finds that Clinton's husband former President Bill Clinton is also a highly divisive factor among many voters.
Meanwhile, Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination Senator Hillary Clinton has now pulled into the lead among both Democrats and independents:

According to Clinton, the new role has provided momentum to his wife's campaign. He speaks mostly to Democrats, and often to crowds made up mainly of the working-class whites who have tended to vote for his wife anyway. Still, in the 20-plus rural Pennsylvania counties Clinton visited, he said his wife won at least 60 percent of the vote. In Lumberton on Wednesday, he relayed that statistic to the crowd and implored, "Please don't break my string." www.washingtonpost.com

The Jeremiah Wright flap is really hurting Barack Obama.
According to a new USA Today poll , one-third of likely voters say that Obama's ties to his former pastor make them less likely to vote for him.
Clinton's hurt by her ties to her husband. McCain is hurt by his ties to Bush. But those ties are unavoidable.
The idea that Obama is paying a steep cost for the statements of his former pastor is sure to anger many African-American ministers, based on the conversations I had last week. The ministers I spoke with couldn't understand why Wright has dominated campaign news or why Obama has to say anything more about it.

I've taken my shots at Hillary lately, but this one popped in my head today as I was reading this article about the Reverend Wright "flap". In it, Washington "uncommitted" superdelegate Ed Cote (uncommitted in the sense that he hasn't made his intention to vote for Hillary public - yet) is quoted suggesting: The Wright firestorm is "worrisome because it's created a lot of footage for people to make hit ads â" ammunition for the Republicans." As the Clinton folks have turned over every rock to suggest that winning = losing and losing = electability and Obama can't win despite every poll that says otherwise and common sense and basic math, they've often attacked him, then defended themselves with the "we're worried because Republicans will use this against him" defense.
