Hell no. In fact, the good things compensate the bad. The framework does excel in quite a lot of areas; there is amazing talent working with and on Rails and there are good resources if you want to join the fun yourself. Rails is a great framework, we've had tons of success with our implementations (and others have too), and we're happy. Some things, though, are not as good as some people claim they are - i.e. people selling you "enterprise knowledge" with no experience, or major consultancies who hire (or train) the wrong people to work with the framework.

I suspect that the Ruby community is happily waving goodbye to Zed Shaw. His sense of entitlement is enormous, he can't go 3 sentences without cursing, and - based on this post alone - any project you want to have succeed would do well to avoid him. I've worked with prima donnas before, and this guy shows all the classic chest thumping signs of being one. Here's something very telling:

Zed (please, do not confuse him with me) -- of Mongrel fame, apparently (I had never heard of him) -- is hitting it hard in Rails is a Ghetto . It's a long rant with, how shall I put it, a lot of f-words and c-words. Mongrel is a webserver (as I understand it) for Ruby on Rails, which was developed by Zed. He's now cutting off from the Ruby on Rails community in a way that's not seen a lot (thankfully). If you have some time and are a good at skimming long texts there are some funny and/or interesting things in there on people in the Ruby on Rails community (which are according to him the most arrogant bunch around) and ThoughtWorks as well.

This makes Cédric's posts about Rails sound like an 'excuse me, but' love song. There's no work for a smart man in a town full of stupid.
Although I agree there might be some stupid people working with Rails right now, there's a huge number of very bright people too. And there's stupid people working with PHP, Java, Python, C, Haskell, Erlang, Lua and Factor too.
The thing is: Rails is getting easier to use every day, lowering the barrier of entry for new coders.

You will be missed, no doubt you are skilled and knowledgeable as Mongrel weighs in heavily. Likewise no doubt that Rails the community and the framework has its flaws, you just can't see an the explosive growth we had while keeping everything pink.
Still you might want to work on your ego, as it overshadows your accomplishments. Don't spill poison in a well just because you do not want to drink from it anymore. You'll end up with a bias against you irrespective of the future community you'll work in.

The early developers who switched to rails have always been an eccentric bunch. From Why and his * to Hampton and his beer drinking conference talks there was always something entertaining happening. Well the latest rant from Zed (who brought us Mongrel ) is something you would never find on a MSFT blog.
I'll never be afraid of some pilsner fresh fat fuck who eats donut hamburgers and only gets exercise when he plays World of Warcraft on a DDR pad.

First thing I happen to read in 2008th is Zed Shaw's " Rails is a ghetto ". Like Zed or not, like his tone or not, he's amazing developer and a good writer. I'm far from being anywhere near as good as Zed Shaw, but I tend to share views from his rant.
And the main topic of that is "then idiots come". Recently another great hacker told me that seems that hordes of morons start to dance around Ruby community.

Zed Shaw is ranting about Rails. The effects are palpable. People are talking about the post. I've seen no less than a dozen tweets on Twitter in the last hour or so, and it has been by far the vast majority of the tweets about Rails.
The post is clearly consistent with a theme of healthy and vigorous commentary that Zed generates about the ethics and behavior of folks in our world, the industry and on the Internet. His position can be summed up as follows: don't do anything on the Internet you wouldn't do in person.

I just read Zed's post 'Rails Is a Ghetto' and while I didn't have inside experience he has, well… let's go from the start. First his post is really insightful and amusing. Also he talks about Rails in a way most Railities didn't used to. Of course he mentions performance and crashing problems. Whew !!! Now if Rails crashed on DHH every f*** 4 minutes in order to run BaseCamp, why did apparently smart person like him waited to come to that, I would have picked up friggin C++ long time ago if nothing else was working.
