The Club for Growth, which advocates limited government and lower taxes, points out that as governor he increased taxes on sales, gasoline, cigarettes and nursing homes. He says he had little choice because of court-ordered spending increases or rising federal entitlement spending for programs "over which you don't have executive control."

Huckabee is campaigning as a conservative, but serious Republicans know that he is a high-tax, protectionist advocate of big government and a strong hand in the Oval Office directing the lives of Americans. Huckabee on a Roll : Bob Novak's column about Huckabee ( False Conservative) shows that he is now a force to be reckoned with. The Evangelicals have latched on to the Arkansas governor and are moving the numbers in Iowa. Huckabee is a favorite of the social conservatives but not with the economic wing of the GOP. The Club for Growth has attacked his record and a split in the party could follow Huckabee's ascension. Robert Novak has a must-read on Mike Huckabee. The money line, in terms of geo-political interests, may be: "Any Republican who does not sound much like a Republican is bound to get friendly press, as Sen. John McCain did in 2000." This helps illustrate exactly why Huckabee is receiving the fawning of the mainstream media that he is: he divides conservative interests and in the end would be an easy candidate to topple by a liberal opponent.
Here's a little more of Novak:
Huckabee clearly departs from the mainstream of the conservative movement in his confusion of "growth" with "greed.
