Sony UK boss Ray Maguire has explained to Eurogamer the rationale behind the stripped-down nature of the 400-euro PlayStation 3 : Sony needs money. We here at Game|Life have installed special metal bars near our computer chair, like they have in the handicapped toilets, so we can hold on to them to keep our balance for when Sony spins things, and we were gripping them with a sort of white-knuckled tightness when we loaded up this article. So we were surprised to find that Reeves actually just gives it to us straight up:

Probably not. Even though the PS3 is cheaper and the Xbox 360 dropped its price a little while ago, the odds of the Wii dropping its price are pretty slim. Still, that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning out its usual volume of "you know what."

SCEE, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has just released some information about the scheduled release of the 40GB PS3 which will be on sale in Europe on October 10th! Some additional info regarding the PS3 is that the 60GB Starter Pack price will drop to 499 Euros and will be on sale "while supplies last." If you're interested in the 60GB PS3, then you better hurry up and get it. Regarding the new 40GB model, it is set to include two 2.0 USB ports rather than four, doesn't sport multi memory card port and more importantly it can't play PS2 games.

Sony just can't seem to make people happy with the PS3. They formally announced the much-rumored 40GB version of the PS3 -- currently available only in Europe though it'll probably hit the states before too long -- that'll be the cheapest model yet and every gaming site I've read is calling it the worst version of the PS3 so far.

In an effort to justify the loss of backwards compatibility with PS2 games, Sony UK head honcho Ray Maguire has said that the money previously invested in BC is better spent on game development and to further decrease the hardware price point. As we come to our first Christmas with the PlayStation 3 there's going to be about 65 games in the marketplace, so we feel now that there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down so that people can get into the franchise.

only support PS1 games, not PS2. I find this confusing and strange. It was only last year they said that backwards compatibility is a a natural, core part of the PlayStation experience. Sony's take is that they want to spend the money elsewhere and that they feel their extensive library of 65 PS3 games is enough to satisfy the market. Sure, the PS2 is still available, so it's not a huge deal, but the way the PS3 is a very complete package, hardware-wise, just took a hit. And once again, it's Europe getting the shaft.

Now that Sony has finally come clean and announced its new 40GB PlayStation 3 , it's got some "splaining to do." The biggest issue on most gamer's minds is why Sony decided to cut the backwards compatibility feature that linked the PS3 with the PlayStation consoles that came before it. SCEE managing director Ray Maguire said Sony will use the money it dedicated towards backwards compatibility to invest in new games or to perhaps lower prices so more gamers can afford to buy a PS3. "It was a big decision, and we know it is a very emotive subject as lots of people think that backwards compatibility is high on the agenda and yet few really use it," he said.

As you know I have a Wii and a 360, and I guess I always assumed that when our PS2 gave out, it would be replaced by a PS3. Well Sony have decided not, with the only reasonably priced console (the new 40g version) having ANY KIND of backwards compatibility removed . I don't care what the reasons are, our kids still play PS1 games every now and then on our PS2, and I'm damned if I will add to our PS2 collection knowing that when the console dies, so do the games. Add to that their control freak attitude to DRM with Blu-Ray causing issues … to be blunt… they can shove it up their….

Maguire tells Eurogamer that by this Christmas the PS3 will have a whopping 65 games and so they feel "there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down.
