News in today's AdAge that Andy Berndt, co-president of Ogilvy & Mather's New York office, has left the agency to go to Google, where he will head up a new global unit dedicated to collaborating with marketers, agencies and entertainment companies, is a pretty good indication that the 800 pound gorilla is making plans to get into the agency business. Not good news for BDA's! Particularly, if after a while it decides that it would make sense to cut out agencies and deal directly with clients. The new global unit isn't being called an agency, but as AdAge points out, any unit offering creative consultation and account services could be considered one.

Do you know how the advertising agency came about? Let me quote from the now fabled tome "The Shocking History of Advertising!": The original agents had owed their allegiance to the newspapers rather than the advertisers; they had been debt-collectors at best and fee-snatchers at worst. Now agents began to identify themselves with the advertiser. The number of newspapers was so great that only a specialist could keep track of them all, and form a view as to their usefulness. Some of the leading agents were even undertaking to prepare the advertiser's copy and illustrations for him.

Interesting news today from AdAge on Andy Berndt's move from Ogilvy/NY to Google. To my knowledge, this is the first transition we've seen of a major advertising executive over to Google. What does it mean? "He will helm a new global unit dedicated to collaborating with marketers, agencies and entertainment companies." "The new global unit isn't being called an agency, but any unit offering creative consultation and account services could be considered one." I think this good news for advertising.
